Happy for Yoda. Glad to see they don't have the man in the suit standing on the front stretch, reaching safety standards of the 1990s now

Gutted for Vette. Was hoping the Captain would at least get on the podium.

That was fairly enjoyable. Lots of dry running.

Not a big surprise after last year!

Congrats to all the winners:

#8 - Bulletproof despite an incident-filled season so far. The biggest kick-start to their season.
#38 - The Mighty 38 finally gets a well-deserved victory after two years of near-misses.
#91 - Corvette who? Revenge for Bahrain? A swansong for GTE-Pro and one of their finest crews.
#33 - Hopefully Ben Keating gets to keep this victory! A flawless drive from all three drivers.

I remember the checkered flag being waved from the flag stand in '00 and '01. But then again, cars were allowed to park on the front straight to wait for the winners back then, too.

I think they did a cool down lap after 2011, too.

Correct. Panoz and Caddy came close but you could say they weren't really "All American".

Kudzu, Riley & Scott came close a few times, but yes. First time in our lives an American car is on the overall podium! I'll take it!!

I would say more about an american team, the only american thing on 007 is the US flag stickers.
EDIT: my bad, guess the last american team to get a win at LM was the audi champion team.

How many laps

A couple of things for completeness.

First the total laps.

Until hour 13 we were on for a record distance (matching 2010). However, it was always unlikely as the laps were back loaded in 2010.

A few hours with lots of SZ and the problem for the leader (less important) put paid to it.

In the end there was a total of 380 laps; 9 more than last year, but 17 short of the record.

The record isn't really on with today's likelihood of cautions, even if they don't come from a full SC, and the pace of the current cars.

Thanks for keeping things posted guys. Another great race at Le Mans. No matter how you look at it, there’s always a guarantee it will be a memorable event. Of course compared to the aforementioned 2010 maybe it isn’t quite what it was then, but then that was a golden era

However this year’s event had loads of positives, even if it was another walkover for Toyota. Plenty of great battles in the other classes. And it should be even better when more manufacturers hopefully join next year. One I am looking forward to is BMW. And the event has a great structure in place to make things work with the current gen of cars

Cheese 24 hours!

The hourly updates

Overall
#8 won.
The race ebbed and flowed between the two Toyotas. Each benefitting a few seconds from stops and SZs, until the #7 lost best part of a lap going through a tedious reboot. #7 tried to fight back, but #8 kept up the pace and controlled it.

Other than the odd lap, especially at the end when Glickenhaus, put in some almost fastest laps, the other others couldn't keep up. An hour or so in Toyota was about 1 to 1.5s faster than the others. They then scored with more consistency and better reliability.

Well done Toyota.

LMP2
#38 dominated.
Wow, just wow for JOTA. It was impressive - all the cars are the same. I would say the most dominant performance of the race. Consider the volume of competitors and how lots of them didn't suffer any reliability issues.

Towards the end it's dominance suffered when it lost out during the SC and there was a brief period when the weaker drivers were on track at the same time; Gonzalez couldn't quite match Colombo's pace. However it wasn't that much and the team even left Gonzalez in for a stint longer than they needed to. It was totally under control.

Well done JOTA.

GTE-Pro
This had a lot in it. I think I'll miss some stuff.
Corvette had the early pace, but then Porsche seemed to be getting a bit of a pace advantage as the conditions changed. At the same time Corvette had problems with both cars, delaying #64 and ultimately eliminating #63.

Porsche took over with the #92, after #91 had been delayed earlier.
Then the #92 locked up into Mulsanne, followed by a tyre blow out which damaged the front of the car. It was impressive how quickly they fixed it, but it was down the order.
It is also impressive how quickly they can change discs and pads now!

In all this changes with the Porsche and Corvette the Ferrari #51 kept popping up in the lead.
Ultimately the #91 came through with it's pace advantage.

Well done Porsche.

GTE-Am
All the Porches were at the front. With a couple of Astons in the mix. The million Ferrari's always seemed to be outside the top 6 or so.
This ebbed and flowed depending on who was in the car.

In the end the #33 Aston came through; it was always there over the last few hours, but never got more than a pitstop ahead so the front was rotating quite a bit.

Well done Aston.

According to Kubica, the Prema car had clutch and engine overheating issues in the second half. Also they were losing time in the pits pretty much the entire 24 hours. Still a solid run by them in that team's first Le Mans appearance. The better Jota was simply out of reach this year for everybody else, an excellent, faultless race they had.

A couple of things I forgot to mention.

9 retirements! Wow

Well done Algarve. Strong showing. Brilliant. Two extremes with the car. Pain on lap 1 and win!

After the past couple of years, I think this quote summed up Le Mans this year as a whole:

"We don't go down easy. We always get up and come back hard."--Jim Glickenhaus.

Not to take anything away from the Glickenhaus, but I still think the best result by an American car since the win by the Ford Mk IV in 1967 was the 4th placed overall for Gavin, Beretta and Magnussen in a Corvette in 2006.

That said, I think the ACO dodged a bullet this year by not allowing the LMP2's to run Intermediates, only slicks or full wets. If we'd had on/off rain, we might have seen the GT cars ahead of the LMP2 car like 2006.
