Irish Rallycross Metro history

Have been going through some old pics of Metros that have been used by Irish drivers over the years and just trying to piece together the history of who had what cars and where they went

Dermot Carnegie : Red & White car

John Maloney : Red(white front bumper), Lime green(yellow front bumper), Green & White(x F Patterson), White(x Haffey?? or Kittle??), Black

Norman Kittle : White(with green stripes)

Fred Patterson : White(dayglo orange trim) did this become the dark green and white Village Homes car

Denis Biggerstaff : Blue and White, then red, yellow & blue???

George Tracey : Blue & White, is this the x Carnegie car

Aiden Creegan : White

Dan Donoghue : red, x Twomey car???

Lawrence Gibson : red, yellow and blue....how many cars has he used over the years

I do know that the red Maloney car is currently being restored in N.Ireland

Gibson has used at least 2 shells - I seem to remember he sold a spare shell a few years back only to buy it back almost straight away as he'd binned the 6R4 in a big way and had to reshell. He ran the 6R4 in a white scheme for a while (not sure which shell that was!)

Dermot Carnegie reshelled his Metro at one stage also. I don't think Tracey's is a Carnegie car. He debuted the reshelled one at Mondello's round of the ERC around 90 or 91 and had all sorts of problems with punctures. He did finally get a clean run to win the C final as my memory serves.

There was another on not on your list, Robert Moffet ran a (white?) Metro at one stage also. Not sure where he got it or where it went.

The Moloney 6R4 was sold to John Haffey from whom he then bought it back IIRC. Didn't he do likewise with his Escort?

Karl Cleary used to hillclimb a 6R4 which I think was one of Denis Biggerstaff's.

He destroyed it on the Ballyalban hill a few years ago. I heard that he started to rebuild it but it's probably a very long term project

As far as i know, Dermot's car was built from a Rally car & not previously used in rallycross. this car was subsequently used by peter Faulkner , Laurence Gibson & is indeed the car now owned by george tracey.

Did Dan Donoghue buy Terry Briggs 6R4 or was it Ian Rowlance that bought it?

Cracking subject for a thread 'peespeed'! I told you I'd pop in and contribute my thoughts. Here's what I stated elsewhere regarding Dermot Carnegie's cars...

Dermot's original rallycross car was indeed the ex-works C97 KOG (Wilson 1986 Scottish / Duez 1986 Hunsruck / Wilson 1986 Mantta) which he acquired from Fred Patterson in December 1988.

As far as I can tell, his debut event in the car was the Mondello Park Rallysprint in January 1989, and his last event in this car was Rd 4 of the British Rallycross C'ship at Mondello Park in March 1992.

The car was then stripped and rebuilt into a blue rolling shell - which I gather was the ex-Barry Hathaway / John Hay rallycross car - and became Dermot's 2nd rallycross car and was debuted at the Mondelo Park ERC round in June 1992. This car was later sold to Fred Patterson / Peter Faulkener / John Maloney.

The original shell from C97 KOG had been left stripped / untouched for almost 18 years, but has recently been purchased with the intention of rebuilding it to it's former 1986 works specification.

Hope that helps - I'll work through some of the other cars shortly, once I've had a chance to 'take in' everybody's comments...

As I stated in the post above, Dermot had two cars - both red/white as he more than likely saved costs by swapping al of his panels from the first car (C97 KOG) onto his second car rather than incurring aditional costs respraying everything a different colour - only guessing mind you!

The works car was stripped to a shell and sold on - now about to have a full rebuild started but don't hold your breath!

The ex-Hathaway / Hay car was eventually sold to George Tracey and became his blue / white car - and it is still owned by him too!

Aiden Creegan also used two cars (well two bodyshells!).

His first was an ex-Brian Bell rally car which Aiden debuted at the 1988 Lydden Hill ERC round. Crashed heavily at the 1988 Rallycross Grand Prix at Brands Hatch and rebuilt into his second rallycross car.

The damaged shell of the first was repaired and sold to Belgian ace Paul Kumpen throught Tery Hutton.

Aiden's second car was built on a new shell and debuted at Lydden Hill in January 1991. This car was later hillclimbed by Norman Kittle, and rallycrossed by John Haffey, John Moloney and Lawrence Gibson. This car has been mainly white al through it's career, although I'm not sure what colour it was when Lawrence used it?

Here's a quote of mine from elsewhere on here, and I wonder if anyone on here knows anything about Lawrence's car(s)...

Maybe somebody else knows some more accurate information.

Lawrence has two shells, the current rallycross car runs the reg number C84 RBD which some of you will know is an ex Jimmy McRae National Breakdown 86 number and Billy Coleman had that number too.
Freddie Patterson bought his car 97 KOG from Pete Slights.
Denis Biggerstaff's car was reshelled into another shell and used for Rallycross while the other is still stored at his place and will be restored with A658 NJO plate one day as this is the car he bought from Cumbria
