It's a rather strange story, the 1949 race.

The winning Ferrari belonged to Peter Mitchell Thomson, and was entered for him and Luigi Chinetti.

During the race Selsdon declared himself unwell (a cognac hangover was rumoured) after around 72 minutes at the wheel only climbing into the car for the first time just after dawn on the Sunday. The heroic Chinetti drove more than 22 of the 24 hours, finishing so exhausted that he had to be lifted from the car.

Selsdon died in February 1963, so can't have been in your offices in the eighties. His son and current Baron Selsdon, Malcolm born in 1937 was a director of Mildand Bank Group between 1976 and 1990.

As you say, there was no internet in the early 80s. I have to thank the internet for this information as well as Quentin Spurring and Brian Laban's books on the great race.

So it must have been the son, i worked for midland bank from 79 and it became hsbc were i continued until 2012 when i retired.

GG and Marshall were saying on TWISC that the lack of a reserve list being announced is likely due to the fact that there aren't any.

It may well be that a few entries come out of the woodwork nearer the time.

let us hope so as normally a few cars will drop out and we want a full grid if possible

A few entries dropping out might inspire others to put something together.

I don't see any harm if a few don't make it. There still be plenty more ready to put something together when that happens. We'll see what happens

I'm sure there's a few that could come in from lesser series, providing they have enough budget that is.

but they must have a car that is eligible to take part, really that means LMP2 and already plenty of them.

GG said on TWISC that a number of full season ELMS teams were not even bothering putting entries in.

Likely down to a combination of economic factors, COVID and the fact that it's unlikely there will be big crowds at the race.

If things look a bit rosier in a couple of months then we might see a couple. But I doubt they will formally release any sort of reserve list now. They'll just appear on the main entry list if anyone does drop out.

You do wonder why some ELMS teams wouldn’t even consider a Le Mans entry. Of course the current economic climate can’t help, so that’s bound to be a factor

I don’t think we will a reserve list either. If anyone does drop out, we’ll see if there is enough time for a replacement
