They sit on the outside of a 2" shoulder strap, and stop it from sliding off, especially prior to and during belt tightening. Once they are fully tight they probably don't do a great deal that the high friction surface doesn't manage.

Seems to be different opion to what the flip up is....
I would want the "Hans" with the quick release tethers for emergancies. Is it still possible to have hans post fitted to your helmet I have a less than year old expensive Bell without posts fitted (was an option). How do you tell whats the correct angle without actually wearing it in the car? I have a digital level for setting wing angles, measure from vertical down onto my chest? Flip-ups are to retain belts in the right place. Red straps are to release quickly the straps which restrain the helmet to the device.

So long as the helmet is drilled and a 2005 Snell - you'll be fine - if not back to Bell. Anything with a Snell 2000 tag can't be retro fitted .

Sure it's a Snell 2005 but not drilled so back to Bell in the USA??? How did you work out what angle you'd need? |

Have a look at http://www.saferacer.com/hans/?tagarray=10. If I interpret it correctly, the quick release tethers may just be an option. The flip-ups only appear on one of the versions of the device pictured. No substitute for asking an expert or, better, two. Regards Jim |

Not sure if its Bell USA or agent in UK. Arai - the agent is in Stoke for eg. You need them to give you the FIA sticker for the Hans.
All single seaters are the same angle - i think the sizing only applies if you either have a neck th size of rhino or have non adjustable (in terms of direction) belts. |

The optional quick release tethers have been available in the USA since HANS came on the market Andy.

For single seaters use either 30° or maybe the 25° if it is still available. Depends a bit on your size / seating position.
Quick release tethers are a bit a waste of money, as usually drivers take the Hans and helmet off at the same time. But if you like them, feel free to buy them, us retailers will be happy. Bell will only place the clips at their HQ, but will not drill holes in a helmet. Most other brands allow some of their dealers to do the work (never drilling). |

So,
If you really want a HANS, buy a helmet with posts fitted already. The flip ups do very little because the belts cross the front of the driver so tend to pull together in a frontal crash. |

Good.
Doesn't suggest it's better just that 90% install them. Also it doesn't specify whether the customers are helmet manufacturers or independent racers. My recommendation stands I'm afraid. |

US, I guess John?
FIA does not allow this, as all anchors that have been put on the helmet at a later stage need a special FIA sticker, to be placed on the helmet with an according number. Ie if anyone would ever check that number they could see if it has been installed by a certified person / company. Mail me that link John. |
