Less than .200 between the top 3 LMP1's.

.15 to be more precise--most impressive IMO, though is early. However, Shanghai is sort of like Fuji, as far as having long straights and mostly slow corners and a hand full of fast ones, and we know how close things got there between Audi and Toyota. Not much reason to not expect more of the same.

McNish saying this track will more likely favor the Toyota.

The straight is probably not long enough for Audi to make up that they lose to Toyota in sector 1.

I also expect that Audi will not be able to match the race pace of Toyota. So Audi will have to gain time in the pits, by doing one less stop and hopefully by finally being able to double stint the tires.

Thanks to everyone for their support with the guides this year. Really appreciate it.
Small update as Jan Charouz has replaced Liuzzi at Lotus.

Toyota's up 3 tenths in S1 (to the #2), gives it back in S2 (but to the wrong Audi #1). Then is a tenth back in S3.

Wurz shows the true potential of the TS030 with 1:51.666.

EDIT: And he improves to 1:50.573! Almost 2 seconds ahead of the Audis

Audi and Toyota both did a longer run during practice 2:
  • Audi #2: 23 laps, 1:52.865 average
  • Toyota: 22 laps, 1:51.870 average
Note that Audi can do a bit more laps if they want to. Lotterer did 27 laps in practice 1.

A difference in race pace of 1 second would be huge. This could be a very easy win for Toyota on Sunday.

Either Audi were sandbagging or they were really off compared to FP1, especially considering that one of the Rebellion Lolas got to within about half a second of the faster of the two Audis.

Shame that Liuzzi's not in the Lotus-Lola/Lotus-Judd BMW. Charouz is quick though.

That car/team has really come on in the last few races. Hopefully they can kick on into next season with the new chassis.

I wonder how much harder both Toyota and Audi would be pushing this year if Peugeot were still in the WEC. We would have had some really top-class racing. Toyota's speed is really going to have to force Audi to do some serious development work this offseason, as they know Toyota won't stop development on their car. Next year's LeMans 24 Hours is going to be an immense battle.

Probably not enough Lola spares available to accommodate Liuzzi.

I have just been looking at the shanghai IC lap records for different catergories and how the fastest P1 cars stand. Currently, the fastest time of this weekend is 1 second slower than an A1 GP car (1.51) and an Aussie V8 supercar (2005 - 1.51) and 6 seconds off a GP2 car (2008 - 1min.46).

I was pretty startled to see how fast an Aussie V8 was around there!

At the end of the day a touring car title looks better on your CV than "put in some properly quick laps before mechanical failure."

The problem is that they have to put Kevin Weeda behind the wheel.

Looks like it was slightly wet track, Toyota still on top in P3. In the 1:48's for the Toyota on slicks now, demolishing the best time of the weekend by far.
