I just don't see why they should be getting participation trophies.

Also, if they want to race in a Pro/Am class, a very strong P2 is still an option.
The reason for it was to encourage wealthy am drivers to bring money to the series so teams could run. If you get rid of the Am class, you'll lose a lot of money, and therefore teams. There's good reason LMP racing came out of the back of the financial collapse better than what it could have been. That's why we see Indy struggling to fill a 33 car grid, and F1 struggling to get new teams in.

And yeah, P2 is great. Not all drivers have the ability to run that. If you want to exclude people based on that, then that's fine and completely understandable. But with that comes a lower car count.

Indy 500 only needs 33 drivers and a maximum of 33 teams. F1 only needs 20 drivers and 10 teams. Le Mans needs around 40-50 teams and 200+ drivers. You need allowances for this. You could say "race with the pros", but if you're also expecting someone to race with the pros and spend a couple of million a year, you'll get less interest.

ELMS being a Pro/Am series is good, since it's not top level anyways. As far as Le Mans goes I'm not convinced removing GTE Am would have any meaningful affect on car counts, in the same way I've argued for a long time that P2 and PC have been cannibalizing privateer P1 and IMSA P, which seems to have been proven pretty true this season. But there's some complications in regards to Le Mans entries and generating ELMS car counts.

This is a good point. PC was phased out in IMSA and 5 of the 7 teams stepped up to the P class and the series is much better because of it.

41x

17x LMP2*
18x LMP3
6x LMGTE-AM

* 7 Oreca, 6 Onroak, 4 Dallara, 0 Riley

Hopefully the micro GTE grid projects smaller than expected numbers for 24 hours AM list tomorrow as well, as originally you might've thought some of the WEC-rejected to end here after all (?)

Five Michelin-cars in LMP2, of which probably 3-4 will end up at LM, so there will be tire war at la Sarthe again

I guess the return of SMP Dallara is surprise so that's 3 teams already with mixed LMP1 + LMP2 campaign this year which we haven't seen for years, however I'm not sure they'll enter it for LM

Nice to see Ebimotors racing a Porsche. Wonder if it's an old spec RSR or the '17 spec car for the unknown customer in Asia.

It's quite interesting prospect for these teams at Sarthe, "plan B" in terms of overall honors if succeeding with LMP1 fails. Which, in the case of ART-SMP especially is quite smart (if they receive entry) given the AERs will almost certainly blow up

Saw the entry list. Prototypes is very big right now and is certainly the IN thing. GT racing has probably lost a lot of teams to prototypes.

Does ELMS even need a GTE category? Or perhaps there should be a prototype series with LMP2 and LMP3 (include Le Mans cup ones). And a GT only series with GTE-Am and the GT3s from the Le Mans Cup. With a monster grid of 35 prototypes. Why have 6 GTE Am cars at the back?

Did Rebellion Racing move to Algarve? The weather is definitely better over there.
