BERPOP 1973

I have been to a few Saloon meetings over the last few months, and met up with an old adversary MIKE BERMAN. Clearing out a load of old programmes and press cuttings, came across this.

I saw the Berpop on one of my first ever visits to Mallory Park in the late 60’s I think. Not sure if it was the same day, but somewhere at home I have a programme from about then with a picture of Tim Shenken in a Formula Ford on the front !

That picture brings back good memories. I competed in the Super Saloon race at Mallory on Easter Monday, 1974 and Martin Sellicks was racing the Berpop. I was at the back of the grid and as I came out of the first part of the Esses on lap 1 the Berpop was all over the road spinning wildly. I missed him but he retired there and then. The car was a chocolate brown colour at that time.

I remember the car being raced in that colour scheme too. At the time I don't think that 'chocolate' was the word we used to describe it!

The Berpop was number 12 in the race mentioned in my previous post, so probably the same day. Do you have any pics of Ford Escort number 14 (aubergine and silver)?

My recollections of racing against the Berpop in the 60s was that it was formidable under acceleration and along the straights, but was fairly reluctant when it came to cornering. I can only remember seeing it at Mallory, although my memory could be suspect after all this time, but the Berpop was handicapped there because of the hairpin - there were a number of us who had trouble keeping up with it until we approached the hairpin, at which point we would all bunch up again.

It certainly was a magnificent beast, along with a few others such as Richard Scantlebury's Janglia which also suffered from the same problems as the Berpop.

Just come across this thread again and looking at the photo (and Mike's comments) it's not surprising it's handling was 'suspect' as it looks as if the wheelbase and track are the same dimension.
