yes, they are loud but it does depend on where you are, some posts are louder than others.
They are also fast, but the main thing is speed difference, the LMP cars are a lot faster than the porches so just have to keep an eye on things. I did it last year and it was fantastic! Will be back again this year. |

It's a great meeting, especially if you're flagging. After six hours of near permanent blue, your arms ache like hell. Worth every minute of it.

I'll get the bad bit out of the way first. LMS meetings tend to be long with some tedious support categories (Peugeots, anyone?). Don't let that put you off, it just needs to be said merely so you're prepared for that bit. There that's done.
So to the good bit I love LMS. Big hairy sportscars driven by some of the best drivers in the world. Forget F1, IMO this is where you'll find the biggest talent pool. All mixed up in several classes and usually huge fields, putting a premium on the driver who can work the traffic. Not just speed, but intelligence needed too. Flagging for it is awesome, and it's usually the first thing I volunteer each year. Cars are loud (except the diesels), but not uncomfortable since they're generally big bangers rather than high revving screamers, but it's worth having earplugs with you in case you're in one of the noisier spots. Ear defenders are worthwhile if you've got a radio so that you can follow the race commentary and so know what's going on. |

Well put Wooley and, with it being an FIA meeting, flag marshals will be given radios, so ear defenders are worthwhile to hear any transmissions through those aswell.

as long as you are prepared for the long days its a cracker. nasty weather can also turn it in to an endurance for us as well as the cars, but watching people like McNish ploughing thru traffic in the dark is just awesome

Woolley-you can breath a sigh of relief as there's no Peugeot Spiders this year! We've got Formula Le Mans instead, which looks like identical LMP2 type cars so they should be quick but not a huge grid (as seems to be the norm this year).
The Classic race (CER) is usually a cracking grid, similiar to the WSM we had at the Classic (60s & 70s prototype Lolas, Chevrons etc). The Radicals can sometimes be ok, if they don't catch fire. As for the big race-no works Audi or Peugeot entries, but 2 privateer Audi R10s. That should make LMP1 a bit closer. The Astons & Pescarolos will be the main contenders there. LMP2 looks good, with 15 entries. GT1 is very disappointing with only 2 cars but GT2 looks great, with a lot of variety. 40 cars altogether should keep the flaggies busy! I've spectated at this event for 5 years now but this will be my first as a marshal so I'm really looking forward to it. Do we do the whole 6 hours or do we have a bit of stand down time? |

As for stand-down time, it all depends on the numbers who turn up. If you are flagging on your own then make sure you let your Post Chief or IO know that you are alone and arrange some sort of cover for loo breaks / cup of tea etc. It can be quite a good opportunity to get the Post Chief working for once! |

Anyone seen an entry list for the classics yet? I was downbeat about them the first year with only 9 starters and fewer finishes, but the last two years they've turned into something pretty special. Gorgeous cars raced hard and lots of them. |

If you have a look at the Classic Endurance Racing website you can see the results of all the races this year, although it is not showing an entry list for Silverstone you get a very good idea of what will be racing. |

Will be there for this one and in what capacity only Alan can tell!! I seem to get all sorts of odd jobs at this meeting and they have all been good! I missed the FLM race at La Sarthe, but they sound great! A vast impovement on the peugeot spiders (shudder)! The LMS cars are not noisy really as the Db limit was dropped again by the ACO this year, shame really cos noise is part of it! That said the Ginetta Zytek is as much fun on the ears as usuall! As far as this being a FIA event I think the ACO would have something to say about that!

I got a bit worried at the start of the year-1 rolled Saxo, several incidents & a fire at the Snett 750mc meeting, then the forementioned Radicals at the Rock (plus a few more incidents there). Then it all went quiet.....until the Lambos kept breaking their suspension on our post at Silverstone last weekend! Who knows what will happen at the LMS.................

Just read on Autosport that Nigel Mansell is racing in the Ginetta Zytek LMP1 car, with his son Greg. Should bring in a few more punters.
