This is the first time I am seeing a possible return to Le Mans (albeit in the distant future) mentioned by a Porsche exec:https://www.thechronicle.com.au/news...uture/3668599/

It seems this was done BEFORE the lmp1 program came about.

The press release of that concept said they do NOT intend to make any sort of real, road or race, car of it.

If only had they stayed in the first place for even little while longer (like a year or two), then we wouldn't have to have had ACO panicking like little spoiled children and hastily coming up with these garbage new lobbyist regulations... instead there would be the "boring" conventional ones ACO introduced in 2017 LM for 2020... you know, which still maintained the idea of real racing. What a shame. It's not your fault Porsche, but still a shame

Then again these gimmicks were part of the rules package:
- full lap made in EV mode only after a pitstop - finishing the race in EV mode only If there was anything good that came out of Porsche's widthdrawal it was that these two ideas got buried instantly. |

Well it depends really. What kind of racing suits it. I think it makes no difference to me

The second one was silly and could've lead to horrible consequences, but meh the first would've been fine I think... maybe pushed the manufacturers a little

Well that’s the way it goes. Some rules work, some don’t. I guess it’s what they are targeting with these rules

There used to be some talk or rumors about Porsche continuing some engine program after axing WEC... This story from May confirms there was a V6 development program for F1, and even after deciding against F1, that program has continued in smaller capacity.

I hope this doesn't end up like another Carrera GT situation with the engine being planned for an entry into racing then decided to be used for a "super sports car".

Well I hope it gets used somewhere, be a complete waste if it wasn’t. Like with the Polo WRC that never raced

Unfortunately none of the current Porsche models (either road or racing) seems suited for the 2020 rules.
Increasing the width of the cockpit of the 919, would result in a new monocoque, which would basically a brand new car. A modified 935 would not stand a chance against the purpose build Glickenhaus and the 917-design is just a wet dream for all Le Mans enthusiast - it will not happen as downforce vs. drag demands has changed since the 70's (mainly because of fewer straight kilometers). 918 is too old and would not have any marketing value any longer. So all in all, it sounds like Porsche would need to design an LMh or LMDh from scratch* *LMDh, as scratch as possible since it will be using a stock chassis. |
