SOM FF1600 - Round one to Wills
Gavin Wills dominated the opening round of the Daly Systems Star of the Midlands FF1600 Championship at Silverstone today. The Van Diemen RF00 driver beat Alex Ames by over 13 seconds, while reigning champion Peter Daly failed to finish.
Ames made marginally the better start from the outside of the front row, but Wills soon forged ahead. He was never challenged. It was a relatively quiet race too for Ames, but in the closing laps the Swift SC93 driver found Justin Dawkins closing in on him. Dawkins had clashed with Daly at Becketts as the pair scrapped over third place, with the championship sponsor pitting to assess the damage. Dawkins fell behind Jamie Smyth (Swift SC94) and Stuart Kestenbaum (up from 11th on the grid), but when Smyth hit clutch problems Kestenbaum had to back off, allowing Justin back through for third. Following Smyth's retirement Kestenbaum was fourth, well clear of newcomer Mark Armstrong in fifth and Benn Simms, giving a UK debut to Mygale SJ2002 in Kent specification, was sixth. Wills, Ames and Kestenbaum each took class honours, with John Pearson completing the list with pre-1982 victory. Wills set fastest lap on the drying track with a 1m 04.319s effort, but Dawkins was only three seconds off the pace. The second round is at Donington Park in eight days time. |

Jamie Smyth (Swift SC94) ????
I thought he was running an RF90 this year. Have things changed? Ian, thanks for this speedy update. Is this a sign of the quick updates we can expect from clubff1600.co.uk ? I hope so. |

IMHO Possibly 3 tenths per lap. All will become clear when Mr Sowman posts the times.

Nice pics Paul.
Looks like the lad in #90 Van Diemen RF78 could do with sorting his seating position out. Looks a good candidate for the Whiplash Award |

Number 90 is Northallerton's David Owen. I guess the Mygale's handling might improve after race or two - well, you'd hope so...

We would have all known if you had been willing to go head to head with him, but I understand you might be a bit scared, been away from it for a while and all that

Next time, try for a few more of the best looking car out there - Black Swift SC94, numbered "9." Seriously, introduce yourself and have a cuppa (not this weekend as she has committed me to the garden rather than Donington). |

Maybe a stupid question, but I see so many Formula Ford topics on this forum, is this all about the same championship, or are their different championships???
