Alonso took a chance that could have been inspired but didn’t actually cost them a position?

Could they have realized that?

It was a bit nuts for a few laps. As others calling out, odd strategy from AM. Even worse as it seems that at its worst, Alonso was faster than Max when both on intermediate tires. Max pulled away when it dried, but it would have been interesting if Alonso had passed when he had the pace and could he have held off Max in drying conditions?

Obviously kidding

That was a good race. Ocon did a superb job, as did Verstappen and Alonso. I felt Alonso was compromised by the team with the early stop, so to keep it on the black bit on slicks was pretty impressive!

Some great driving. Rain makes things exciting.

That was a brilliant race, the best this season by far. Even when it was dry, it was still the most interesting with the strategic element of the race and all the entertaining overtaking further back. The more difficult overtaking is, the more exciting it is when it does happen.

Then the rain obviously made it a thriller. If Alonso had pitted for intermediates on that lap instead of slicks he would surely have taken the lead and won the race, although of course they didn't know it would rain so much at that point. But it was a thrilling sequence of the race.

And that has to go down as an absolute masterclass from Verstappen and Red Bull, and you can see why they are the dominant force in Formula 1 at the moment. Pitting around lap 30 seemed like such a no-brainer but they predicted perfectly that they would need to stay out until it rained. And for Verstappen to keep matching Alonso's lap-times on those medium tyres was hugely impressive already, but to continue to do so in wet conditions on those old tyres was outstanding. Perhaps Verstappen's greatest drive in Formula 1, along with Spa and Suzuka last year and Interlagos 2016, and he has absolutely cemented his place among the all-time greats now (perhaps just sneaking into the top ten of all time).

Alonso was also very strong, as always, and Esteban Ocon drove a fantastic race to take third, fending off the challenges of Mercedes and Ferrari, as well as outperforming Gasly. It was probably his strongest drive in F1 as well, even better than his Hungary win. Meanwhile, both Perez and Stroll had disastrous races attempting to come back after messing up in qualifying.

Monaco delivers once again! This place absolutely deserves its place on the calendar.

I would say the rain delivered. Up until it rained it had been fairly dull.

I would love to agree, however I can't. I think most of the "strategy" that played out during the dry involved gambles due to no good options remaining such as Perez attempting the early stop or due to anticipation of rain such as Max running his first tires so long. If the race had remained dry, its likely it would have been viewed as quite boring.

All in all a satisfying weekend in front of the "Teev".
P1 and P2 were fairly dull
Lulu crashing in P3 and perez in q1 were shocks.
Qually was brilliant
And the race was damned good all the way through.

Race was DELAYED here, my local channel decided to air local news live and then commercial interruption, made the race feel staggered and stuttered. But felt like a good things went sideways react to what the world throws at you and drivers had a good challenge on their hands.

The difference of opinions between ‘super’ and ‘damned good’ on the one hand and ‘fairly dull’ on the other is quite striking on this one and is born out on the rate the race poll too. Personally, on highlights only, I thought it was pretty dull and was banking on the rain to liven things up. Sadly it didn’t really deliver. The first three in particular drove great races but I was nonplussed by the pit call for Alonso to change to dries moments before everyone else piled in for inters. Monaco is Monaco. I enjoyed qually but the race, well it wasn’t really a race was it, but then Monaco very rarely is.

The race was tense. So it really depends on how the person feels in the tension. Highlights may not have captured just how tricky the rain was, especially at the start.

The rain didn't cause much, but live it created tension.

Yes, I can accept that. But tension doesn’t necessarily bring excitement. These days I look forward to rain as it tends to produce the unexpected. Perhaps we were hoist by the fact that virtually everyone drove really well and we didn’t get any SCs to mix things up a bit more.

This. I found it all a bit tedious, the efforts made to talk up the rain which (surprisingly) did absolutely nothing to spice up the race. Even Alonso's failed attempts to change to slicks did nothing to change the finishing order. Likewise, those who ran up the escape roads suffered little physical penalty, even Russell's 5secs imposed penalty did nothing to change his race, although had he not had it, he may have pressured Lewis a little more.

I have to accept that I'm not as enthusiastic about Monaco as others are. We know what to expect from Monaco. We know we're not going to have a 'race' as such so those like me rely on some kind of incident or weather change to actually give us something to concentrate on and get excited about. Qualifying was different because it was man and machine against the clock, but man and machine in a train unable to overtake each other (apart from one or two inspired moments) who have no real hope of achieving anything unless someone in front drops it doesn't quite do it for me. Others are inspired by strategy calls and I totally get that, but other than the Alonso call, I didn't see very much at all strategy-wise that caused me to think that one team or other really got it right when others didn't. It is what it is. However we talk it up, Monaco is just Monaco and if watching cars follow each other at silly speeds around the streets of the Principality floats your boat, all well and good.

My wife occasionally sits and watches a few minutes of a GP and she actually remarked that the whole thing was pointless with cars that are so big. As one who knows very little about motor racing, she's quite astute at times.

P38 in workshop has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Can't dispute the notion that the cars are big, maybe too big for a place like Monaco.I can't see it changing anytime soon as a ground effect formula will gain from having a greater plan area to generate the downforce.I'm still wondering what might have happened if Alonso had gone for intermediates instead of doing a lap on medium slicks.

According to reports in the Times, Alonso made the call for mediums, having been offered the choice with inters, as it was only slightly damp on his in-lap. He was then somewhat surprised at how wet it was when he went out again......

I didn't know that, but I still find it entirely inexplicable. Stroll stopped for inters at 16:10:52. Almost 3 minutes later Fred stopped and put on slicks. Didn't Stroll provide any feedback once he was out on track? Fred's second stop took 25.9 seconds. He probably lost 10 or 15 seconds skating around for that one lap on slicks. Then he finished 27.9 seconds behind Verstappen. For me, that looks like a race win thrown away.

I enjoyed the part of the race that was dry as well. Although Max Verstappen's win never really looked in doubt until the rain came, the battle for third was really fascinating to me because they were all on different tyres, and it was interesting to see when each driver in that train behind Ocon would go for the pitstop, and who would have better tyres to mount an attack at the end of the race. And further back, I really enjoyed the overtaking at Monaco. Kevin Magnussen's dive down the inside of Logan Sargeant into Mirabeau was better than any overtake of the first five races, and I was enjoying it being difficult for a change and drivers needing to get moves done properly rather than having easy DRS-assisted ones made. It made the strategic part of the race more interesting for me as well because it was so different to normal, and I also enjoyed having the Alpines so high up.

Another thing that is perhaps noteworthy is that I went into this weekend thinking, 'Monaco is a brilliant track, I will really enjoy the race,' and duly did so. Last time, I went into it thinking, 'The Miami GP will probably be boring,' and duly found it so. This will partly be to do with the fact that I appreciate the difficulty to overtake in Monaco and also find the cars really spectacular around this track, whereas Miami was more about DRS passes which I expected and don't like so much, but perhaps to an extent, if you are looking for a good race you find one (albeit not always; although the slow-motion shots of cars clipping the barriers were exciting, I'm not sure how anyone could have considered Baku a good race). Just a suggestion, perhaps we all see what we expect to see in a race because we want to be right with what we said beforehand so we look for the good of a race we expect to like, and the bad of one we expect not to like.

Then he finished 27.9 seconds behind Verstappen. For me, that looks like a race win thrown away.
I agree with this, had he gone straight to inters he would have been in with a chance of the win IMO. But what I still find strange is that overall, the rain had no impact whatsoever.

given how both AM drivers seem willing to share info with one another during a race, you would have thought for sure they would have passed on Stroll's feedback to Alonso.

at the time i thought Alonso was being clever and was willing to take a chance in an all or nothing approach to score a win (and if it had worked it might have gone down as one of the all time inspired wins) and in the end it didnt hurt them because as Peter says, 'the rain had no impact whatsoever'.

but what i dont get is that why even go back in for a fresh set of slicks at all then?

rather, if you were going to guess/take a chance that the rain would stop quickly and you knew Max (who had been nursing those mediums forever) was going to have to make another stop one way or another anyways, then why didnt Alonso stick with the Mediums he already had on?

i am definitely missing something here?
