Bmw M6 Gt!!!

Autosport today ran a story about BMW looking at entering the M6 in GT1. But it also said the car won't appear until at least 2007...

Wouldn't the car be outdated by then?

Anyway an M6 GT racer would be amazing to see.

If I'm correct the BMW M6 doesn't excist on the road at the moment. Introduction of this model is somewhere in 2005.......so 2006 is a test & develop year, ........2007 racing

There is no M6 road car although expect it to hit the road in 2006. A 7 series revision is expected before then and possibly also 3 series.

The 645 itself is still a new car so I suspect BMW are seeing the long term sales figures first before commiting. Remember this 6 was not just a replacement for an old six as there was severla years gap between the old model finishing and the new one starting. The sales figures are good so far so I suspect the M6 will become a reality as soon as the engine is ready, the M3 CSI has already tested alot of the lighter weight materials so that should aid production speeds.

exactly what i thought would happen... hopefully this goes through as a M6 would look great mixing it up with the DBR-9, C6-R, and MC-12

Why exactly would BMW want to compete against Maserati, Aston Martin and GM (Corvette)?

Surely their rivals are Audi (LMP1) and Porshe (GT and(?) LMP1).

Sorry, I thought the M6 existed already. Silly me.

I think BMW wants to go back to GT racing because of America. BMW needs to do GT racing to impress the Americans. The report in Autosport stated that BMW will likely send Schnitzer back to the ALMS to race the M6.

Anyhow a BMW 6 in racing is fantastic. The ETCC 635CSi was what got me hooked to motorsport.

'If' BMW came back I would think it would either be with the M3/M4 in GT or in LMP1.

GT1 does not make sense for them.

For those with Autosport, did you guys see the artist impression of the proposed M6 GTR, in the Nurburgring24H W/B/R livery?

Yes indeed, very intresting. BTW I think u will find that photo would be in the spa 24hr livery because if u see the Freisinger Yukos Porsche behind it it has Proximus sponsorship on the front window, and as we know Proximus are the title sponsor of the Spa 24hrs.

I think you knew which one I was referring to. Anyway, it would be a very lovely car to look at when it comes out.

Yeah i sure do know which one u was reffering to as u said the nurburgring 24hrs, when the pic was in fact from the Spa 24hrs. Yes the car will be very good when it does finally make its racing debut, will be intresting to see if it can match the MC12 and DBR9, the GT1 class of the future is shaping up to be looking very, very competitve.

I may have missed this elsewhere, but is there a chance that BMW will bring back the V8 M3 GTR in 2006? Autoweek mentioned that BMW is releasing a V8 version of the M3 in 2006, which will get rid of the homoligation woes that killed it in 2002. The car ran strong in the 2001 ALMS season.

Was noone else slighlty concerned about the article in Autosport about this?

I'd love to see BMW back in Sportscar racing, but all this talk about having a series which slows cars like the Maserati down and 'speeds' up (presumably with looser regulations) sounds all too artificial for sportscar racing. The Maserati issue I can just about cope with because of the cost issues, but to get the 6 series onto a par with the Maser and DBR9 - isn't that pushing it a bit?

Surely an M6 racer should be in a different class. I want to see lots of manufacturers in GT and Prototype racing, but not if enticing them all means that the results are decided by the rule makers instead of the cars and drivers.

Or am I over-reacting!?

I have the same concerns. In FIA GT the Maserati can be artificially pegged back by ballast/restrictor changes, but when the same cars race in ACO competitions, such as Le Mans/LMES/ALMS, these artificial restriction will not be in force.

If the Maserati is completly dominant because it is the best car, the ACO will do nothing to close up the competition. Afterall they didn't take any action against the R8, Viper, or C5-R when they dominated.

slicktsax has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
true jag but do remember the FIA GT regulations and the ACO regulations will become the same in 2005 or is it 2006? so i don't think we need to worry as much. as far as the M6 in GT1 why can't it be there, it has a 5 liter V10. and if they need more power they can always enlarge it. remember the prodrive 550's had 5.5 liter V12 in road form then were stretched to 6 liters and the C5-R's Ls1 engine started out as a 5.7 liter then stretched to 6 liters in 1999 then they stretched it more to 7 liters in 2000. i think the M6 will make a great addition to the GT1 field if BMW decides to race it. and a lot of BMW's sales are in north america so it makes sense for them to race in one of teh premiere road race series in teh states. grand am doesn't have the same amount of coverage as the ALMS. and they don't race in the speed GT anymore they only did that in 2003.
