Minisprints
Do you remember when mini roof's needed lowering and body seams stopped the air flow to much. Here's Guy Collins in the Don Moore's 1275 Minispint.

This one's from 1967 not sure of driver or owner but was being sold by Rob Walker, Corsley Garage Ltd. for 750 pounds.

Ah Minisprints, what excellent devices they were. Made real Minis look all tall and old fashioned. There were two schools of thought to creating a Minisprint. The cheapskates used to simply chop the roof. Not quite the real thing, old boy. The purists took a chunk out of the waistline too. Much more like it. And am I correct in thinking that madman/genius Paul Emery did the same kind of thing to Hillman Imps?

A friend of mine has a business up in Norfolk UK and specialises in modifying Mini's old and new. Sure he could build a Minisprint. Some photos of mods he has done are on his site http://www.gomini.com/

Laurie Stewart & Brian Foley raced 1 Broadspeed GT here in Australia in Castrol colours? Lakis Manticas raced a Buckle version of Mini which was similar to the Broadspeed without the tail.

In the late 60's, I worked for Stewart and Arden for a couple of years, in their Commercial Vehicle depot. In one of their clearouts, my attention was drawn to the Minisprint promotional brochures which were about to be chucked away and burnt, along with a load of old van brochures. Needless to say, I saved them from this fate, and still have one or two somewhere. If I can find one, I'll scan it and post an image here.

The Ogle Mini which towards the end of its short production life was called the Ogle SX1000 was a quite different animal from the Minisprint, as it was built using an entirely separate body designed by Ogle himself rather than modifying or 'chopping' the mini body. It was of particularly high quality build and has become a bit of a collector's classic. Peter Filby says that 66 in all were built.
The Broadspeed GT, Minisprint and Ogle SX1000 were all very distinctively different developments from the 'Mini' theme, and there were others, notably the Mini Marcos amd Mini Jem. |
