Winston Cup points
How does the scoring work for the NASCAR Winston Cup? I've never managed to figure it out.

The driver who leads the most laps during the race gets a 10 point bonus and any driver who leads at least one lap gets a 5 point bonus. Then final finishing order gets rewarded with the following points:
1-175 2-170 3-165 4-160 5-155 6-150 7-146 8-142 9-138 10-134 11-130 12-127 13-124 14-121 15-118 16-115 17-112 18-109 19-106 20-103 21-100 22-97 23-94 24-91 25-88 26-85 27-82 28-79 29-76 30-73 31-70 32-67 33-64 34-61 35-58 36-55 37-52 38-49 39-46 40-43 41-40 42-37 43-34 Note: This is the same scoring system used for Winston Cup, Busch Grand National and the Craftsman Truck Series. Or you can just focus on rooting on your fav's & let NASCAR do the dirty work. They list it at the end of each race. |

Don't forget the driver who leads the most laps of a race gets an additional 10 points, because they get 5 points for leading a lap, and 5 points for leading the most laps.

By virtue of qualifying you pick up 30 points?

One other thing, owners get some points if they attempt to qualify a car for the field but the car fails to make the grid. The driver gets no points in this situation but the owners get some points (in a declining order..I think 31 for 44th,etc.) if they attempt to make the field. This helps the borderline teams because money is handed out to the teams at the end of the year based upon where they finish in the owners point standings. Also owner point standings are used as a pecking order for provisionals. Teams get the same amount of points that the drivers get in the race except for these failed qualfying attempts. |

The F1 points system is the only one I can keep track of. Everything else, I just rely on the info that's provided for me.

I remember Dale Jr. had to take the green at Homestead '98 to win the Busch Series, so You're right you need to take the green!
