Canon EOS 40D

Anyone here using the EOS 40D?

Just got one to replace my 20D, and as yet, even though I have not used it on Motorsport. It looks a great camera!

Used it for the first time today for a snatch picture for my paper...

And at only £500 an absolute bargain. I can buy almost five of these for the price of a new 1D MKIII.

Any tricks about using it?

Great camera. I upraded to it from a 30D (350D before that)

Tricks - only 'trick' I use is to set the AF to the AF-on button, then use the other custom function to swap the * and AF-on button functions as the * is better placed.

I particularly like ISO being displayed in the screen all the time and the 3 user defined modes on the control dial.

What about the 'Auto-ISO'? Have you used it?

Have used it - however, prefer to set ISO automatically - it seems to use a stop too high. The ISO display however prevents a lot of 'oh bugger I've been shooting in daylight at ISO 1600' moments.

I've not used one, but my brother has got one and is very pleased with it I think.

You'll notice at Croft I kept my cameras covered up

40D has some weather sealing around the battery cover but nothing really more than that. I always keep a rain sleeve in my bag for when it rains - I'd rather look silly than come home with soggy equipment.

Hmmm. You could look elsewhere for gear?

I love my E-1s in the rain.

You think that looks silly? You should try a Tescos sandwich bag...

I've just got a 6 feet square (apparently) chamois. Can't wait to see what that looks like...

My first attempt at waterproofing was a piece of bright yellow polythene gaffer taped around my lens hood. Worked a treat. Now using a water proof cover from the group buy over on TP. This has proven to be very good as well.

6' square chamois - (I quite like the smell of chamois leather)

That'll make you easier to spot in the rain Mike - we'll just look out for the camera lens with the head and tail attached

I've used the 40D professionally since its release. It's a very good camera and I'd used it in place of my Mk.II often because of better image quality. It's worth the money.

If anyone is interested. I returned my 40D!

It stopped working! Used it at a race meeting, took 1300 images, then just stopped!

Kept showing err99!

Replacement should be here soon.

Err99 is a generic catch all error message. Could be dirty lens contacts, could be a battery error...

I used to get Err99 with my old 350D and an old Sigma lens - the Sigma lens was too old and needed re-chipping.

I understand that. I have experienced err99 at some time on all my canon camera's.

It's just this was not going away.. so the camera did!

Surprisingly it worked okay on live-view?!

Hmm. I have a 300D with an err99 fault.
Seems to be CF related, in that it cannot see the card. Any card?

Ho hum, time to play Camera Strip and Lose Bits...

The book that comes with the 40D says card problems should show err02?

Lens connection problems should be err01?

Do you get the same message if you set the camera to take pictures without a card? And then try to take a picture with the card missing?

Yep - my 8 month old 40D has packed up after about 4,000 shots. The top panel works and i hear the lens autofocus but the shutter doesn't fire and there is no power to the back screen.

As for waterproofing - I use an old walking gaiter - works a treat.
