Patrick H should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
A newbie needs some help...

Hi all,

This is my first post on the forum, so hi all.

I've bought a Van Diemen RF86 which I'll be hoping to run in a few rounds of the NW FF1600 championship this year ahead of a full season next year.

The car is in good condition and is ready to run but the starter motor has packed up and I'm having a real problem finding a replacement. The original unit is totally knackered according to the guy I asked to repair it and it can't be reconditioned. There's nothing on the unit to identify where it comes from.

I've spoken to John @ Medina Motorsport and Simon at URS, but I've had no luck so far despite their help.

Therefore I was wondering if anyone knows what replacement starter motor I need?

Thanks...

kartingdad has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Is it pre engaged type? 3 lugs or 2?

If 3 lugs, probably a Fiesta one. IMO it doesnt matter too much that it looks the same as the one you took off, it's what fits that matters most.

pm me if you get stuck

Cheers guys. I spoke to Mike W at lunchtime and he gave me quite a few pointers so it sounds like I'm going to head to the scrapyard this weekend and make a start there...

Kartingdad - I will give you a shout if I need any more info. Your offer of help is appreciated!

I don't know the 86 but if it's the three bolt starter with the solenoid perched on top then you'll find it here : http://www.universal-rotating.co.uk/...ternators.aspx

Part number is UNS375N

If you have a bell housing you may need to angle-grind a little of the alloy starter motor case to fit otherwise it should bolt straight on. Cost's about £5o plus VAT and any Motor Factor should be able to get one. They are brand new units not reconditioned and if you want to make it out of the assembly area probably preferable to a scrapyard....

Hi Patrick - did you get it from Andrew Henson? If so, he can sort you a replacement. If you didn't get from him, he will have a second hand one and I have his contact details at home. Please let me know if you need them (I think it is actually an old Datsun motor in a van Diemen frame)
I hope this helps
Mike

Thanks again chaps.

Mike - I did get the car from Andrew Henson so I do have his details, thanks. He has a unit that needs reconditioning which has come off an RF86 he's just broken. I think he's planning to keep as a spare for his own cars. I asked him if he knew what road car it had come from and he didn't know, alas.

Patrick.

I don't know where you are based, but there is an Auto Electrical stockist in Manchester (City Road, Old Trafford) that should have them. I got a replacement from them a couple of years ago. About £110 on an exchange as far as I can remember.

Give them a try.

Thanks Walshy. I live in Manchester so that's very handy. I will take the unit to them and see what they've got.

Patrick,

Not sure if it will help but my RF86 starter motor has the following Lucas model numbers on the label.

LRS390 6 88 LEF

HD31200 689-006 BUE

Hopefully someone might be able to find the correct model by cross referencing the part number
