Will Mazda ever consider another go at Le Mans with a wankel?
I was watching old clips of the 787B and I love how this thing sounds. Are rotary engines banned from the race for good?

No ..... unfortunatly they cant cuz some bright spark has outlawed the engine for Le Mans , along with V10 & V12 too !!!
Banned with the presant rules , yes . However , I would like to see said persons placed against a wall and beaten to sense with a baseball bat . I want first go too . |

The base for this utter nonsensicle idea is to be found in the whole CO2 hype ofcourse and since this is getting to be known as a political scheme more and more every day,I'm not afraid of them banning V10's,V12's and rotary's for ever.

If Ralf Schumacher does indeed sign for StefanGP, then no.

I don't believe that the rotory engine was banned(the Mazda powered Courage from the ALMS in '05 and '06 was an LMP2 car, and LMP2 engines are supposed to be the basis for the post 2011 LMP1 engines).
However, I doubt that the rotory engine will see serious use in an LMP car anytime soon, as they're not really competitive under the current rules-low torque and the chassis has to be almost purpose built for the Wankel or else the design will have too many comporimises(the Courage LMP2 Mazda was overweight, as the C65 LMP2 and the Courage/Pescarolo C60 Hybrid shared the same tub, and was built as a LMP900/LMP1 chassis, and due to the extra cooling that the rotory engine needed). |

I would love to see Mazda run either a turbocharged direct injected rotary, or one running a wave pressure supercharger. Would help with the torque deficit, and it would allow the engine to maximize its advantage over poppet valve engines.

Those Fudge-ruckers... Competition, atleats in the Motorsport world adds variety and therefore more interest... Rotaries as mentiooned by previous posts abaove have a tremendous noise, they don't hold back that's for sure but on a serious note, how would Mazda make up for the Torque issue considered its restricted abit. I doubt they would be competitive.

If it wasn't for the restrictor formula every car would have been running a turbo for the past 15 years.

Mazda have canned the RX-8 because it won't meet future emissions regs so the rotary is dead for now. Too bad.

At least the artical seems to indicate that the company has not given up on the rotary engine and a new generation of RX sportscars is planned.

"and cannot meet the Euro 5 standards."
Another reason to thoroughly hate/despise the environmental extremists of the EU. Lying their heads of,waisting many billions on a fictive so called 'CO2 threat' and now blocking us europeans from one of the finest and technologically advanced engines. |

Think they would prefer balloons, could sit in the basket and talk about how great they are for saving the planet and fill the bag in seconds. Only problem is could they stop congratulating themselves long enough to ever come back down again? And would we want them too?

There's a future RX7 coming with a new "16X" engine, maybe with forced injection. So it's not dead, no.
