Steady on John! That release was only dated 29/3...credit where credit's due for the MSA.
That means the latest batch of Snell 2005 won't expire for UK use until, ooh, 2020? £15 a year isn't bad value is it? Less than the cost of the latest superstar supporters' club cap. Mind you, I'm glad 2000 has another lease of life...means I don't need a new helmet for myself until I bite the HANS bullet. |

Oh and if its on there website you can hardly claim it was slipped out unannounced, and as midgetman points out you will probably find it in the latest issue of motorsport now.

There's an interesting article article about F1 helmets on Autosport's web site at the mo. Contains some stuff I didn't know, like relative strengths of materials. Of course it's mainly pertinent to FIA 8860-2004 (the F1 standard) helmets but there is a particularly relevant discussion of flame retardancy.
Mods: Can I put the link up here? Max |

Of course you can, considering it's relevant to the thread!

Good-oh, it's just that Grant had removed a link to another resource in another post so thought I'd ask. Well I thought this interesting:
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2738 Particularly the bit about F/R helmets...I've had many people say "why don't they just make Nomex balaclavas compulsory, they're cheaper than helmets". I think this answers the question. |

Very interesting!
Pity, 'coz I don't subscribe to Autosport, and I can only read the first paragraph. Care to copy it into Word and post the result here, please? John |

Which is why I asked originally.
Paraphrasing......carbon helmets *are* stronger than carbon/kevlar/GRP tri-composites but heavier, the latter fact I didn't realise. They do cost more to make, they *do* give more protection etc etc. Mfrs have upgraded their designs in the light of Massa's accident. Regarding the FR properties, helmet outers and inners need to keep temperature inside the helmet down to 70 deg C despite direct propane flame of 790 deg C being applied. So much for "Why can't we just wear a Nomex balaclava?". Oh and the article discusses helmet suck, but you'll have to pay the registration fees to find the saucier details...... |
