Autosport Show and camera settings

With a bit of luck I'll be at my first ASI this weekend. I'll have my Canon 1000D with me, and I'm still new to it, getting used to all the adjustables that a DSLR can offer. To give me the best chance of some good photos, can anyone reccomend a starting point for settings using the camera indoors? I could leave it in Program Mode all day but that feels like its cheating

My only experience of shooting indoors in mixed/low light has been poor, but that was photographing RC cars travelling at 30+mph, no flash allowed so couldn't get enough light into it without photos being a blurry dark mess.
