It would be interesting to find out the percentage of paid drivers vs paying drivers through the decades, presumably pre war to the mid fifties (or later) most of the field were made up of the well heeled as very few got there by talent alone as there wasn't the chance of even driving a decent road car, let alone a racing car on a track !

EastonNeston should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Any pairing that included one of Gjis Van Lennep, Boy Haje &/or Rolef Wondelink wold be very strong contenders for winning this.

There is no way that Sato should be considered for inclusion in this list.

A nice one for this is the line-up of team Scarab in 1960: Chuck Daigh / Lance Reventlow.

Not the same way "Worst" as the others, but the result, made them, In my mind:

Hamilton / Alonso.
They could both have beaten Ferrari, but the in-fighting destroyed it for both of them.

For me it would be the Dalmas and Alliot at Larrousse in 1988

You could argue, though, that McLaren haven't had it so good since. That said, I'm sure they don't miss Alonso's tantrums!

That's a really good get!

Villeneuve / Pironi must have been the worst of all time, no exceptions.

Lauda / Reutemann wasn't too flash either!

Well he'll probably end up back there one day in all probability. Childish occasionally yes, but hardly devisive (sic).

This was more a case of "the wrong car" - they were both half-decent sports car drivers, and could probably have posted lap times equal to other back-of-the-grid regulars, if they had had rear-engined cars.

There was a good point earlier about the history of pay-drivers. When did it really begin in earnest? Up until the early 60s (I reckon) most teams picked drivers who were available, and paid them. Whether or not they came from privileged backgrounds didn't really come into it. There was a small pool of fish, and the big ones got the biggest retainers and bonuses, but everyone got something, even if it was just a share of the prize-money.

Was it to do with the advent of sponsorship in a big way? We'll fund your team if my lad can drive? That'll be around 1968, then.

You lot are incredibly harsh. Dalmas and van Lennep both won Le Mans, Dalmas four times!

Yes. This thread has so many nonsense picks, it's hard to know where to start.

You are right, Delmas qualified on pole at Vallelunga in 1987!

Didn't end well when a joint pulled out of the suspension, but nevertheless ...
