2002 Greg Moore Legacy Finalists...
So who do you guys think should get it?
Firstly, I think these are four great choices for the award this year. According to Cart, "The award was created in honor of Canadian Champ Car star Greg Moore, who lost his life in the 1999 CART season finale, and will be presented to the driver who best typifies Moore's legacy of outstanding talent on track, as well as displaying a dynamic personality with fans, media, and within the CART community." Paul's done a tremendous amount of work for Cart this year, as well as a number of charities. He's also given a lot of support to young drivers, such as Mr. Allmendinger. Also, anyone who spends any time around the Cart paddock knows that he is probably the most approachable driver outside the cockpit. Patrick Carpentier wouldn't have gotten my vote for this award back when he drove with Greg, but he's really come a long way. Anyone remember him in checkered boxers jogging down the pitlane in Mid-Ohio? Michael Valiente is an extremely nice guy, who will undoubtably be in Champ cars in the near future. I don't know what it is about him, maybe his smile or his attitude, he reminds he of Greg in so many ways it's almost scary. I have to admit I know least about AJ Allmendinger, but he has put up some amazing results in Barber Dodge this year, making the championship look easy (which it is ANYTHING but!). I can't wait to see what he can do in Atlantics. Who knows how far this kid could go... Last edited by Jay; 5 Nov 2002 at 02:45. |

btw, I although I have a lot of support for the others, I have to vote for Paul for his openness to the media and his willingness to please the fans all year. He deserves it!
Although any of the other 3 would deserve it too... |

Paul Tracy, for his uncompromising stand and his honesty, in the face of $300,000 fines for same... and because I have seen him grow and mature since Greg was killed, and still remain himself. And finally, because when he said "You'll never see me driving one of them crapwagons" he meant it. You won't see him cringing before the television audiences saying "Well, after all, I have to do what's best for my family" and meaning "after all, they offered me a whole whack of money ... "
Patrick is a nice guy in his way, but he doesn't have the spark that Paul has, and the others are just too young. Their day will come when they have had time to prove themselves under fire. |

Patrick. He's really come of age this year with some impressive driving.

Both Tracy and Carpentier have "displayed a dynamic personality." Tracy tells it like it is and accepts the consequences, while Carps is well-known for his sense of humour.
But, of the two, Carps has been the more outstanding on-track. His position in the championship will testify to that. (Although PT has been more spectacular). I simply don't know who to vote for! |

Neither do I. I'm leaning towards Paul Tracy though, but all four of them are worthy candidates. I also think the Legacy award is a good way to keep Greg Moore's memory alive, and want to thank those who founded the award after his untimely death.

Not Tracy. Other than both being Canadian, Paul had nothing in common with Greg. Although my view of PT has mellowed, as he has mellowed, I voted for Carpentier who reminds me much more of Greg in terms of attitude both on and off track.

What are the criteria for winning this award? All the drivers that are the most like Greg are non-Canadians. (Personally I'd give it to Max Papis.)

Max Papis should win it, yes. But of the above, I'd vote for Patrick.

Liz, they have to have had shown some spark on the track too, which would eliminate Max..and a lot of others. Possibly Paul too, he's only had one win, but has had a number of other good performances come up short...so maybe??
Yeah, Pat would be an excellent choice. He's matured a ton this year, has a great personality (anyone see him on RDS?) and is one of the more friendly to fans and the media. |
