AND it was considered a dangerous move -- only "brilliant" in retrospect because it came off.

Well, in those palmy days there was in fact no rule in CART that said you had to stay on the track to pass! So Zanardi applied the Smokey Yunick attitude of "if they don't say I can't do it then I can do it". And did. For those of us who were lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time, it was spectacular, and scary. All I could think of while it was happening was that a Barber Dodge had tried the same thing earlier that day and had come straight across and smacked the barrier directly in front of us. I was getting ready to drop the headset and RUN.

Needless to say there was a rule in place for the next race.

Didn't Zanardi later say that it was unintentional, that he simply entered the corkscrew too quickly and had to take evasive action to keep from punting Herta?

"What was I thinking?" was always Zanardi's best line -- it kept him from getting the kind of punishments PT always got!
