Verglas,

Yes, the 312PB was one I should almost certainly included. I rather like the '73 Le Mans cars with their longer tails. The 1969 312P was also rather fantastic - the coupe looked really smart - and was very unlucky not to win a race.

D-Type should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
The greatest overall - Ferrari 250TR
Why? Good enough to win Le Mans, the Targa Florio, Sebring, etc. And it could be driven on the road - probably the last Le Mans winner that could have been driven there.

Other sub- categories

Greatest prewar - Alfa Romeo 8C
Why? Successful in Le Mans, Mille Miglia, Targa Florio etc. And it looked good

Greatest spectacle - McLaren M8 Can Am cars
Why? Success, speed, sound, spine tingling

Greatest sports prototype - Porsche 956/962
Why? Success, success, success

Greatest road going - Porsche Speedster
The only Porsche I know of that had the price kept down so as many enthusiasts as possible could afford one

Greatest looking - Jaguar D Type short nose
Why? The ikon of my formative years

Some interesting choices there D-Type, I like the idea of splitting this up into groups - more choices!

250TR definitely a great, though I think I'd put the DBR1/300 above it. Why? Beat the TRs quite often (eg. to '59 Championship) despite there being less of them. And it was - in my opinion better looking (I know that could cause a stir!). The reason it didn't win more is that Astons didn't continue develpoing it into the 60s.

Greatest Pre-war - Can't argue with the Alfa (I'd have the Le Mans Bentleys in second). If only the gorgeous coupe hadn't had a tyre blowout at LeMans in '38 - it would have walked it.

Greatest Spectacle - Any Can-Am is good, though I think I'll have to plump for the 917/30!

Porsche 956/962 has most impressive record though statistics aren't everything!......

Greatest looking - Umm. a tough one that. I love the D-Type, though I'd go for the '55 Long nose. From the 60s, the P4 and F3L take some beating. 917 - either '71 Martini K or '70 Langeck - would of course be in there too.

After watching the 917 up close at the Le Mans Classic - I have to go for that. An awesome motor car.

In regard to pre-war, the Alfa 8c2300s were substantially more successful than the 8c2900s. An Alfa that only ran 4 times and won every time was the Tipo 412 sports, of which (depending on which source you believe) only 2 or 4 cars were built. These were 8c2900A chassis with 12c37 GP motors of 4.5 liters. They ran both with the superchargers and with them removed and replaced by 3 x 2 bbl downdraft carbs in the middle of the V.
