3state - how is the Getz? Is it good to handle? Run well? Cos one of those (as well as many others as some of you may have seen and read) is another car that is on the list of what i may be receiving as a gift from my parents at some point! Thanks

2002 M3. Got it when I was making more money than I am now. Working too hard to make the payments, but it's totally worth it.

Great car there, eatapc. You're a lucky man living in the US. Here in the Netherlands that same cars costs more than double the US price! For the some money of that M3, here you can buy just a 318 Ci. It's not fair!
BMW's are the cars for me now too. They're really well engineered and built ánd rear wheel driven. For daily use I have an old E30 320i. My wife drives an E30 325i Touring which is a great lovely car. Currently looking for an upgrade i.e. E30 Alpina or a homegrown 335i, just for fun. I am trying to stay clear of the E36 as their built quality is no match for the E30. Perhaps when I have convinced myself that the excess weight step from E30 to E46 doesn't matter as I get older, than I may step up. I am even seriously considering a E39 530i (big 6, no V8 please) for more rear space but that's really a fat ship around the corner. For nostalgia I also have a '73 2002 Touring, light, nimble, oversteering ánd noisy. |

Yeah, the E46 is a heavier car, which I don't like, but some of that weight is in its structural integrity, so it can have a very stiff suspension with low profile tires and not shake or rattle -- and needless to say it corners great. It's too expensive for me (in spite of it being cheaper here than in your country), and it's too fast for most American roads, but it's so much fun to drive that I decided to keep it rather than get something cheaper. Next December I'll re-evaluate and probably go with something more affordable. The newer BMWs don't look very good, so I doubt I'll stick with BMW -- but I may go with Mini.
A friend of mine sold his M3 after a year and got a Mini Cooper S -- and is very happy with it. Another friend who owns Ferraris (he has a Dino in his garage!) bought a Cooper S after being passed by one on a racetrack (Ferrari Club track day). I even talked my retired father into a Cooper S. I visited him over the summer, drove the Mini for a week, and got more smiles and waves in that one week than in two years with the M3. However, I didn't like the front-wheel drive and torque steer, so I'm not sold yet. |

Life is hard.
The Mini must have a brand-over-intrinsic-value even higher than Bentley and Ferrari. With a lot bigger production numbers BMW must be mining gold now. Buy one cheaply with high milage and do the trick Lotus did with the Elise, Opel with the Speedster and Toyota with the MR2: put a series 4 cyl. engine in the back and make it rear driven. Do a turbo if you want more hp. Remember the mid-engined grocery-car bombs of yesteryear the Renault 5 Turbo and the Rover Metro 6R4? They embarrased a whole league of self-proclaimed sportcars and were great fun. But that's all homegrown speed then not a simple stop at the local dealer. |

yeah they are a nice car to drive GTR Mitsu could have done the engine bay a bit better though I reckon. Used to make my job hell plus they would take so long to cool down as well I used to find

Here are my current cars although the Porsche is on it's way out on account of my 8 year old daughter no longer fitting in the back of it. Although it was tempting to cut her legs off! So enter new Passat very comfortable but way way slower than the Porsche, but doesn't handle as bad as I thought it would for a car of it's type.

excellent! someone else who has one of those body-shape porsches. my dad's got a 928, f reg, de-restricted, goes like stink. he got it brand new because he could fit me and my little brother in the back and still go fast. there's a famous family story about my little brother lobbing some duplo bricks at my mum when she was doing 130 down a french autoroute on the way down to the south one easter.
how mega is the steering wheel on late 80s porsches? it's HUGE! |
