There is a decent series of rivalries (not just F1) in Autosport at the moment. The last one was FOCA/FISA, but I suppose we are looking for just drivers here.
IMHO, the best is easily Prost & Senna, but there have been many decent ones too. Mansell/Piquet Jones/Piquet Hunt/Lauda there have been many other close ones too. However these are emphasising the rivalary part. For instance a lot of people say Moss Fangio, but I don't think that counts - they were never really against each other. Not that you have to hate each other to have a decent rivalry (see Lauda/Hunt). |

Senna v Prost
Two of the best drivers ever, in the smae team for 2 years going hammer and tongs to beat each other, pushing each other to greater and greater things! Nice to know that they put aside their differences shortly before Sennas death. For they really hated each other for a few years! |

Senna vs Prost is the most remembered rivalry. And certainly not the friendliest.
Mansell v Piquet at Williams was rather interesting to watch. They certainly did not like each other. TGF v Hill. How about Jones v Reutemann in 1981? The great but albeit far too brief Gilles v Didier... |

As a Prost fan i really enjoyed his battle with Senna because while it was quite bitter at times they always managed to bring the best out of each other.

And there isn't really a BIG fight between Ralf and JPM. It's just an inter-team thing - put it this way, when he moves to McLaren I don't expect to see a fight with Ralf.

In the old saying 'a picture tells a thousand words'
Here's one from the Williams launch in '02. Ralf was almost off the end of that table, and Gerhard was in the middle of answering a question about them not getting on. As I recall, he said 'there is no problem between Ralf and JPM' Myself and the journo sitting next to me were laughing so hard that we were crying! |

Schumacher deserves the title of having created more 'enemies' than anybody else. This is not surprising since he has been so successful and controversial in his 'methods' sometimes.
Prost and Senna was tough, but I never liked the many dirty aspects of it. Piquet/Mansel was my prefered rivalry because they NEVER did anything bad to each other on the track, despite some wonderful battles (I remember Piquet overtaking Mansell at the parabolica in 1986 to win the race, or the race in Adelaide when Piquet had to win, spun while leading, came back and still overtook Mansell; and also the legendary race at Silverstone won by Mansell in 1987 with 'that' move at the Stowe). It is a pity that Piquet was getting old and never recovered from the acident at Imola - in 1987 he wasn't the same driver. Piquet was very funny but also disrespectful. He said Mansell had the ugliest women on Earth (the wife). Then the press reported that Mansell ordered a statue of the beloved wife and put it in the garden. The journalists asked Piquet what he thought about it. He answered: 'Well, now he has the two ugliest women on Earth'. |

IMO Prost vs Senna was the #1; rarely such a concentration of talent and rivalry.
About others you cited, all interesting but not as "talented" (e.g. JOM vs Ralf) or not long lasting (Jones-Reutemann) |

Gilles V Pironi was the worst - no other had such awful results.
Senna V Prost had it all. Amazing ability, differing strengths and weaknesses, very different personalities and attitudes, a spell as team-mates, and a raw hatred. Some of the races it resutled in were thrilling. |
