Jonny Apex should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Another big grid for Clios

28 cars have been confirmed for Brands and the organisers say it could be over 30 by the time we get there. And how good do those new body kits look! Yeehaa!

I'm upset we only get them the once unlike in previous years where they either visited twice or when they did there were two races.

BUMPER GRID ONCE MORE FOR CLIO CUP

A near capacity grid is guaranteed for the opening round of this year’s Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup after 28 entries were received before the championship’s registration date – and organisers anticipate that figure could rise even further in time for round one at Brands Hatch, Kent, on Bank Holiday Easter Monday, 1st April.

Championship Manager Simon North commented: “A couple of teams and drivers are in final negotiations – the grid at Brands could be over 30. To have this number of registrations proves the Clio Cup, with its affordable budgets and close racing, is the UK’s most desirable saloon car championship.”

Just like last year, another close title fight is in prospect, with three race-winners from 2001 – Martin Byford (Sudbury), Paul Rivett (Banstead) and Jason Templeman (Newark) – all returning and being joined by a flood of talented drivers new to the series.

Among them are former McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the Year winner Andrew Kirkaldy (St Andrews), Ford Fiesta aces Eoin Murray (Dublin) and Julian Griffin (Leicester), Alfa Romeo and Fiat champions Enzo Buscaglia (Milton Keynes) and Adrian Millar (Kenilworth) and Porsche title-winner Spencer Griffiths (Watford).

The Clio Cup has also attracted its first ever father and daughter pairing, Rick and Joanne Kraemer (York), while reigning champion team Tim Sugden Motorsport has completed its line-up with ex-Formula Renault racer Robert Huff (Cambridge) – winner of its Michelin Renault Clio Scholarship final and the prize drive in this year’s championship.

In addition to Byford, Rivett and Templeman, back for a second Clio Cup season are three more of 2001’s front-runners – 1993 Clio Cup champion Alastair Lyall (Loughborough) and privateers Vince Martin (Epping) and Mark Davies (Mirfield). Each will be hoping to achieve Clio Cup podium results after fourth place finishes last year.

Meanwhile, Suffolk Renault dealer Bob Smith (Leiston) and Martin Johnson (Alford), the only drivers to have raced in every Clio Cup round since it started in 2000, both return. Smith’s Crisps Garage Racing with INS/Boardcraft-entered car is powered by an engine bought for him by wife Lisa as a 25th wedding anniversary present! Johnson was voted last year’s Clio Cup Michelin Driver of the Year. For Colin Stancombe (Upminster), 2002 marks the first time since 1980 he will start a race season driving anything other than a Ford-powered car. His team will prepare five cars in the Clio Cup, one driven by himself.

The Clio Cup’s Entrants Trophy is now open to all having previously been reserved for teams with two cars or more. This means single-car teams, such as Z-Speed, join the battle against defending champion TSM in what is expected to be an intense title fight.

Hmmm,if they all get through Paddock without mayhem I will be surprised. Then, two abreast around Druids should weedle out a few more and leave my mate Don Basins at post 5 with a handful of angry young men (or woman). Then it's a quick trip into the country for the Clio lads and their first attempt at the newly gravelled Dingle Dell. Wish I was going to be there now
