A can of Coke ?!

OK guys, this one has got me beat. The following is from a Mitsubushi BTCC press release.

As if the on track antics were not enough, Ruokonen then suffered from a clutch problem. A swift visit to the pits saw the team using a whole can of Coke to stop the clutch slipping, enabling the Finn to complete the race.
How the hell do you use a can of Coke to fix a slipping clutch

Ray Bell should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
It either acts as a degreaser... or more likely, it cooled the thing.

They used to use it a lot in Sports car racing as a quick fix to get a car home.

I think the liquid element in the coke evaporates leaving a sticky residue, helping the cluth plates to bite. Ever tried wiping a week old coke ring off the coffee table ??

I understand Pepsi works just as well.

Boths are also very good for cleaning metals by the way, drop a dirty coin in a glass overnight, in the morning it will be as shiny as new.

So many good reasons not to drink the stuff. If that's what it does to machinery, imagine what it does to your insides!

Dad was given a '36 (i think) Ford Cowel Nose Truck. It was in a very sorry state. To free the siezed engine he removed the spark plugs & filled each hole up with Coke. It worked.

Many "soda pop" based soft drinks use phosphoric acid. The acid works to free up stuck parts and after it dries the sugar and caramel are very sticky.

Hey Kev,

How did your dad get the residue out? Or did he just do a rebuilt after that? What about hydro-loc if he did (i hope not) crank it over?
