Old Rally Photographs.

When I lived in a small village in Staffordshire one of my neighbours was Liz Crellin. Liz, as you Rally enthusiasts will know had a car entered by Woman Magazine, and along with Jean Denton and Pat Wright drove in a few International Rallies. Now...not being a RallyMan, I was mainly interested in the cars that were being used and took a few photographs which I hope will be of interest to you. They were all taken at my home circuit Mallory Park, in 1967. Know doubt you will recognise the cars and drivers. Anyway, here we go.
Note to Mod's, if these are in the wrong place to post, please move to the correct place. Thanks, Gerry.

Some interesting pics there Gerry- I'm wondering about the date though? Looks like they're from the RAC, which was cancelled in '67 due to the foot and mouth disease outbreak. Possibly '68? The orange rally number backgrounds date it to the period when the event was sponsored by The Sun, so something like '66-'69 or thereabouts? Anyone able to confirm the year or identify cars? One of the Minis and the Rover P6 ring a vague bell with me, but not sure where from...

The BMC 1800 is 'The Beauty Box', the 'Woman' magazine-sponsored car Jean Denton shared with Liz Crellin and Pat Wright on the backed World Cup Rally in 1970- it was one of several Landcrabs prepared for private entrants on that event by Special Tuning, with the factory team having moved on to Triumph 2.5PIs

A quick Google and an entry list posted on another forum suggests the red/white Mini #28 'RJB326F' is Phil Cooper/Mike Bennett, on their way to 4th overall

The Sun did sponsor the 1968 RAC Rally and I am fairly certain that these pictures are from 68. The door numbers on the 1800 seem to be from a different year though.

Yes, the door numbers on the 1800 are from the London-Mexico World Cup Rally in '70, as seen here on Mikkola's winning Escort

As I said originally guys, I'm no Rallyman, so bow to your greater knowledge. Paddy Hopkirk was a regular visitor to Ron Crellin and Liz who lived near me at the time, and the LandCrab would have been 1970 I guess.

No worries Gerry- they're great pics- it's always interesting to see pics other than the 'big names' and works drivers at the top of the field, and for some reason (not sure why as I wasn't there at the time, not being born until '67!) I've always found this period of rallying fascinating. I've got a copy of Tony Gardiner's book 'RAC Rally Action' at home, which is a good source of pics for the privateers further down the start list, and I think I recognise one of the cars (the Rover) from that. I'll have a look and see if I can i.d any more of them.

....and if there are any more of these in the attic, I'm sure no-one's going to complain if you post them...

I'm glad that someone's pin-pointed the years of these photographs. I nearly made myself look very silly by suggesting the Rover was Roger Clark's famous 4KUE (now why did he choose THAT registration I wonder?) from many more years ago!

From memory, Rover chose the reg no- think the 1964/5 team cars were 1,2,3 and 4 KUE- whether Roger having 4 KUE was a coincidence is probably another story though....

It was interesting when I was a young child as the Clark family bought the 4 KUE (or maybe Rover gave it to them?) registration so I'd see Roger's Mum driving her Renault's (they were Renault dealers) with either 4 KUE or 2 ANR (the registration Roger used on his own private rally cars) registrations.

Daimlerman should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
My God - this thread is bringing back the memories!

Back in 1969 I did the Polish rally in an Escort twin cam with Nick Ward. There were only two other Escorts in the rally, one from Ford France (whose crew I cannnot remember) and another English one driven by Pat Wright and Margaret Lowry. (there were however a whole gaggle of Trabants!!)

The rally was over the same dates as the American moon landing which we watched live on Polish television.

But that's another story!!

Here are some photos that I took of the 1966 RAC rally which was sponsored by The Sun newspaper. The first two photographs are of Jim Clark and Brian Melia. The third photo is of Bengt Soderstrom and Gunner Palm who went on to win the rally. The fourth photograph is Paddy Hopkirk and Ron Crellin and the last photograph is Timo Makinen and Paul Easter.

Great stuff Gerry. According to the results as listed at http://www.teamdan.com/archive/www2/euroral/68euro.html
these three are:

Mk2 Cortina- Summers/Christopher, finished 31st
Escort TC- Sutton/Johnson- DNF
Mini- Davies/Kahn, finished 15th

Going back to the Rover in the pics at the top of the thread, it's the automatic-transmission 3500 of Mike Howells/Malcolm Hamer, which finished 13th, while the Anglia is the car of Neville Cooke/John Brundle-- http://www.teamrubbish.org.uk/History.php
There are more pics of both of these in the recent book 'RAC Rally Action'

Sorry to hijack this thread but is there somehow a menu to discover more about this site. I know there’s more but have to guess…
