Hethel 21st June (Tuesday)

Hi Folks,

The details are a bit sketchy at the moment but Lotus Cars are revamping their test track at Hethel and have a big 'do' on Tuesday 21st June at which there will be loads of F1 cars past and present on the track. I am looking for volunteers who are able to help marshal the day but as yet I am a little unsure of how many Lotus will require. My guess is between 10 and 20 if possible. I am trying to negotiate a free lunch and some travel expenses but that is not confirmed as yet. As soon as I have more details I will post them here. Hethel (for those who don't already know) is very close to Snetterton.

If you are able to offer help can you e-mail me at nat.pro@marshals.co.uk

Cheers and thanks in advance for your help...

I now have 5, possibly 6 volunteers and could do with 5 more.

Was tempted to help, but 2.5 hours each way in weekday rush hour traffic is just a bit too unattractive (despite the lovely cars promised!)

It looks like being an 8am start and finished by 3pm. I am trying to negotiate a packed lunch and some form of travel expense although that's not yet confirmed.

That would explain the noises of a V12 Lamborghini engine I heard earlier. I work a couple of miles of Hethel

Great day at Lotus thanks to all for looking after us, some long downtime (like being at the f1) but when the cars were on track it was fantastic...

sorry to say no Lamborghini lotus may be it was the Renault R29 you heard..

Assumed it was Classic Team Lotus firing up something, not Renault!

A quiet & chilled day. The only incident I had to deal with all day was returning a phone a spectator had dropped over the fence.

Respect to our Nige for the parking display in the Type 81. After detailed radio instructions relayed between Lotus staff to turn the car around & push it back into the static display, Nigel drove past the other cars, booted it through 180 degrees & parked perfectly in the gap. Job done.

Hethel

It was a great day and some good weather for once here in Norfolk. One of the organisers seemed to be getting a little tense with the F1 boys firing the cars up after curfew

Yes but I had to brush the dirt and stones off the track afterwards, twice!!!

Even had one of them spin and stall it down at the south hairpin!

Bryan Degerlund should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I spent the day with Charlotte in the pitlane. Waving the red flag to bring the "hooligans" in, chatting to Our Nige' and Jean Alesi, wondering why the older F1 cars required two mechanics and an air-bottle to start them whilst the "current" Lotus Renaults required two Renault and three Lotus mechanics, two computer screens and a five minute start-stop-start procedure.

Apparently experienced marshals and Fire crew were required to run more than one F1 car at speed. Bruno Senna and Petrov certainly did not hang about when given an open track.

Thanks Stephen for arranging an unusual but enjoyable day.
