Telemetry
In the "Electronics" section of "Technical Tour" under "Data Acquisition - Telemetry" it is stated that when a car is in the pits teams place a small box over the mirror of cars that have the transmitter in the mirror to prevent anyone being harmed by the radiation given out by the transmitter. Surely if such protection was needed for those in the pits the driver would also require such protection while the car was in motion yet, I am unaware that such protection is provided. Is this because the radiation is so directional it would not "hit" the driver? If that is not the reason, what is?

Hi,
Sorry, that part of the site is slightly outdated. Williams used a system like this in '97 and '98 whereby a transmitter was placed in the wing mirror, and the team used to place a box 'shield' over the wing mirrow when the car came into the pits. Apparently the sheild was only precautionary, I guess the health of the driver was not that important then...! I'll update the site slightly to change that. Andy |
