I heard through the grapevine over the weekend that there was a slight 'officials number' problem at Calder and that the Chief Steward initially refused to allow racing to take place until numbers were boosted. I gather this was eventually done to either someones satisfaction or someones threats/over-riding authority that 2 races were run at least on Saturday... Some interesting stories starting to emerge from Calder as well - like the driver who was black flagged (stop/go penalty) for 'hitting' and causing another driver to spin off and, when the C of C was queried afterwards and it was pointed out he wasn't near enough to the other car, there were no marks etc and the other driver admitted to spinning himself, the reasoniung was suddenly changed to 'Oh - you jumped the start then'!!! however, what I did find intriguing - Simon Maas (sp?) aka BIG Simon from Winton Safety Crew was in attendance at Ph Island and NOT Calder Park despite numerous Winton Officials at Calder...politics at play here as well? Never! |

Are the Super Tourers getting slower or are the Future Tourers getting faster ?
The ST's used to flog all the Ft's last season...now the FT's are taking positions away from the ST's. Does anyone care ? |

Well, the first Future Tourer finished 30 odd seconds behind Hills.
I care, but would more if they got there act together and did something new and different, we've got V8 Touring Cars and ST's are old. ETCC rules are the way i would go, they are different, which was why ST did ok at the start, it was something different. Not much chance of my idea happenening though i don't think. |

Numbers of officials
You were right about Calder struggling for officials for Saturday's races RT. Interest that CAMS (in their infinite wisdom) should saunction two meetings in one state (Vic) with Calder and Phillip Island, let alone have the same senario happen in NSW with Oran Park and Wakefield Park's big Historic meeting.
So officals would be stretched to the limit there also. Given that Procar would have brought people to Oran Park from Qld, I wonder how they went for numbers at Qld Raceway on the weekend. I can remember some years back when the ARDC tried to run an AMSCAR meeting at Amaroo and how can CAMS (and AVESCO) canned it because V8 Supercars were running in Tasmania. CAMS cited at the time that they would not allow two major meetings on the same weekend as one of its reasons for stopping the NSW event (there were reasons too). Yep, good old CAMS does it again. |

I don't think there were any dramas at QR- there seemed to be three or four officials at each point.
Remember a while back when they had Super Tourers and V8s clashing- and think of poor old GRM... |

It would have to feel like a hollow victory though wouldn't it ? I mean he's only winning because Paul Morris and Hendo aren't showing up anymore.

...and Paul Morris was only winning because Volvo, Audi, McLean, all of the other manufacturers, the pope, the queen and prime minister of Paraguay didn't turn up.
It wouldn't be hollow, a wins a win. Relative to the competition, Hillsy is the new Morris |

Too right. A win is a win, no matter how you do it, or who is or isn't there. Peter Hills has come a long way since the old Ford Sierra's at the back of the grid. Peter deserves this and should be congratulated.

Too right...the poor old Sierra was one piece of equipment that belonged in a museum long before it was given its last flogging...
Even then when he first got the Mondeo's in 1997, he was the perpetual no hoper, but he started to click in 1998. Remember his cars date back to 1993/94, but they continue to get faster and faster...but then again, you only get more and more speed out of a car at a rate corresponding to the amount of coin you throw at it... |

It would have been intruiging to see how fast the old mondeo's could have gone, if in 99 Ford would have got behind the Knight Racing Squad.

There probably wasn't/isn't that much more speed left in the Mondeos. If Ford had gotten behind them in 1999 (they wouldn't have done that) they would ahve had to bring some new rocket ships in the country, and that most definately would not have happened...
