Derek Bell receives Honorary Citizenship of Le Mans

Today in Derek Bell received the Honorary Citizenship of Le Mans.

It was a very pleasant and typically French ceremony, which took place in the "Place du jet d’eau” below the Cathedral in front of a hundred or so people.

The Mayor made a short speech in English before presenting Derek with a document. Derek made a speech in Franglais graciously accepting the honour and saying how much Le Mans meant to him.

Mention was made of Derek’s 26 starts and 5 wins at Le Mans. He is the second man to be given the honour, the first was Jacky Ickx who received it two years ago.

After a few more speeches all the dignitaries disappeared into the local bistro just as it started to rain.

There were several cars there, included a Porsche (917 I think), the Bentley Exp Speed 8 and several models from the twenties, included a blower.

Yes, well done to Derek and the people of Le Mans.

By the way, is Derek still "assisting" the Bentley team this year?

Yes. In fact they sort of hijacked this presentation, which was a shame. But I don't want to highlight this too much. Let's concentrate on Derek's achievements. As always he came over as very pleasant, likeable and genuine. He deserves the honour.

I met Bell last year at a MoKart charity event. He is a real gentleman. It waqs hilarious to watch him and Brian Redman together. I think they would be an awesome broadcast team for any racing they chose to to commentary on.
