Have BARC completely lost the plot?? Gutted to be missing our annual trek to Cadwell this weekend.. people should just be banned from getting married (shall just have to win the karting at the stag do). |

Ooops! What a pillock I feel now! I've gone and put the scrutineering times down, instead of the qualifying times
Try again: Qualifying: Europa Engineering NW Sports & Saloooons: 9:20 Kumho TVR Tasmins: 9:45 MGOC Classes B&F (Maestros & MGFs): 10:10 Kumho BMW champs: 10:35 Hill House Hammond Ginettas: 11:00 MG X-Power K Sports 1600 cup: 11:25 BARC Wild Wild Westfields: 11:50 MGOC Class A: 12:15 - 12:30 That of course makes the lunch break a more understandable 45 minutes Well spotted, Dan... Well I guess that Guy is me.
My engine ran a main bearing at Snetterton testing and is in the process of a rather expensive rebuild so Cadwell is a strong maybe rather than a definate. I should be on the entry list however - so I'll have to call BARC and confirm.... Just look out for the 2 bright yellow M5's |

After my flying lesson at Oulton, I should be able to make it to Cadwell - just need to change my sump, and pull out the front crossmember, oh, and pick out all the lovely Cheshire grass that I've accumulated

Almost all fixed up now. Brakes are done too, after I crushed a braided hose I can't believe I've got grass inside the clutch housing Bloody stuff gets everywhere!
Mr. Guy - Have you got an engine yet? |

Bit of a disaster with the engine.
I bent a steel crank and rod Bits were both expensive and on order from the M-sport division in Germany. Most bits arrived but the mains and shells were on a lorry that was seized by customs in Belgium! Had to wait for the goods to be released - which means no engine yet. Ricks M5 will be there and I may drive up for the Sunday to watch the racing.... Good luck Chris |

By the way, what was wrong with Rick's BM at Pembrey ? Seemed well off the pace. Stacy. |

Stacy,
TintinRacing.com is no more, the new team name hasn't be registered yet so no site is available. Rick's BM at Pembrey was its first competitive outing. It was off the Kumho pace, but a 1.08.150 is over half a second quicker than BStevens lap record in Grp1 so it was all a bit of a shock with the increased speed. 3 seconds off the leader was disappointing though. Initial factors are: - An exhaust restrictor was put in to get <105dba and on Ricks car it dropped 35bhp. The car was 200kg overweight and with only 305bhp (official rolling road - sealed engine) it could have run as a class B car! - Maximum camber (front) we could get was 2deg, end result was massive understeer and 2 wrecked tyres. - front end too soft, so it was lifting the rear wheel 2 inches off the track around Debendi. So the last week has seen the bumper internals stripped, rear boot lid lightened. Engine peripheral mounts lightened and the car has lost 42kg. Exhaust restrictor has been removed and a centre box is going in. Hopefully the car should regain its missing bhp. The front supension has been stiffened. New air ducts to the front brakes. Uprated front ARB. To get more camber on the M5 is difficult and we haven't worked that one out yet.... |

Sounds to me like you're looking at the wrong end of the car to fix.. Anyway, good to see him out. I checked out his times which looked good and consistent, but thought he was having problems. When is yours materialising ? |

I wasn't suggesting the cars are better than Grp1 - just that we've both come from 1.6 class D cars and the gap between 890kg-130bhp cars and 1400kg-300bhp cars is quite big.
I'm no race engineer, but the fronts are wrecked as the lack of camber meant a reduced contact patch on the corners and that wore the edges down to an illegal condition in 12 laps. The lifting of the rear happened on the left hander; as the front OS was compressing down to the stop it lifted the NS rear. Peter Challis was there watching (ex-M5 racer) and he recognised the cause. Rick would up the front and reported an improvement. Rick also slapped it on his 4-wheel alignment gear and found the OS rear was toeing in, so that wasn't helping. The engine is taking longer than expected but I'm hoping to be out for the following meeting at Oulton on the 22 June. Did I see in a previous mail that you are doing a Jag? What's the score on that one? |

If you can't get a BMW to handle there's something deeply wrong. If you can't sort it the best and soundest advice I could give you would be to talk to Geoff Steel, or give it to him to do the work. He's a clever guy, and understands why and how it works. Costs though. The Jag has been seam welded, cut back to bare metal, had a Gartrac multipoint T45 cage installed and FIA certified, and is ready for paint. Currently on it's side in my workshop while having the underneath primed and painted. Actually, with the arrival of the Mazda I have grown bored with it and wish to sell.. Owes me 7k, looking for 3.5 to include spare bare metal panels, doors, engine parts, etc. |

Looking at antiroll bars is fine - they both have uprated ARBs on them (front and rear) - but they ain't gonna work if the suspension is collapsing down to the stops
I'm sure we can get them to handle better. Geoff is a nice fellow and I've spoken to him a number of times but even he admits that he's never done anything with M5's. The suspension layout is very different on the front compared with his usual E30/E36 M3's. I assume the Jag is an XJS? Sounds like a good project. |

I'd be looking at them, and how they are mounted to get effect, as well as the springs but what do I know. The problem seeming to be load transfer and roll stiffness in general. Haven't seen the car, but maybe roll centres are wrong. As for Geoff, suspect if you volunteered some money his advice might be more forthcoming.. The Jag is an XJ12 - as I said, not interested any more. Have an RX7 to develop. Stacy. |

Anyway The races at Cadwell Park may not go ahead this weekend - there aren't enough marshals apparently. See Autosport, page 99 ("BARC meeting under threat").
I'm off to try and get some more support in the marshal's forum. |

Well.. shortage of marshals at Cadwell.. now there's a new story!!! We went last year and there were about 20 of us for the entire circuit.. problem of being in the middle of no-where with race days every weekend or so..
Hope it works out Chris.. |

Not much to report - slid off twice and stalled the second time. Couldn't get it re-started due to overheating carbs Interesting footage from the in-car video though - more windmill action
