UK Karting Circuits - Safety Standards

Hi guys,

Copied this post in from the Marshals Forum.

For my sins I am a member of the Motorsport Ireland Safety committee. We have recently been asked to consider the issue of kart racing at Mondello Park a grade 2 FIA licenced race track. The problem is the concern of members of the karting committee about speeds on the main straight and the problem of speed for a relatively long time compared to normal kart tracks.

I need to find out about chicanes / modifications if any made to car race tracks eg Brands, Cadwell, Silverstone etc when karts are run. I know that chicanes have been used in the past in some places but I am led to believe it was more a concern for engines seizing than reducing speeds.Any info on changes to the normal car opertions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

I think the karts at the Formula Ford Festival last year ran normally on the Saturday but when the track was almost submerged on the Sunday they stopped the race, a 8 kart pile up at the exit of bottom bend was the main reason for this I believe but Stephen Green should be able to tell you more because he was marshalling then.

Yup, it was the weather that stopped the races that weekend. Even the F Fords struggles to stay above water.

As for circuit modifications, there are non made at Brands when karts run there, but it's fair to say they have only raced there about three times over the past 7-8 years. This is partly due to the fatalaties at the British Kart GP that was held there some years ago.

I would think any changes will depend on the class of kart
you would be running. As most engines are built for sprint
racing your circuit can be 1700m maximum 740m minimum.
some classes run endurence events like HONDA 100cc twin engine.65mph.(class2)ROTAX125cc 2stroke water cooled 95mph
(class1)class4 karts are gearbox and they can be on the same
meeting with other classes at club events.the MSA will answer your questions about circuit modifications. If karting comes to mondello park enjoy your days and
be safe...

Does anyone know what type of karts are racing at Brands on the 18th August, grid sizes, long or short circuit etc?
