fag break

info please.

apparently f1 has an exemption from the banning of tobacco advertising until 2006.

is this a worldwide ban?

is this just trackside or will teams have to find new sponsors?

why are british and french gps not axed like spa?

and what happens to all the others in europe like spain, monaco, italy etc, come 2006?

There is a deminishing sponsorship allowance fading gradually to nothing in 2006. Some races were excluded from this as they had already banned tabacco advertising prior to the agreement.

No new tracks are permitted without it until the ban in 2006. Melbourne had to make an exclusion to it's own laws to win the GP. The 500cc GP was lost from Phillip Island at one stahe for the same reason. Then what do ya know, we changed the law back.

There's a document at FIA's site: Here Basically it says that FIA agrees with tobacco ban and they fully cooperate. But in order to be efective, that ban should be world-wide. The reason behind this is that tobacco-ads would be visible on TV in countries with anti-fag laws when the GP's are held in other countries and the law is pontless.

They came with the idea that the ban in motorsport should start in 2006, but by then everyone should agree to make exceptions for F1 races even though the legislation is already in place. The reason is that most of the sponsorship consists in a large percentage of tobacco money and they just can't find alternate resources overnight.

Problem with teams not agreeing with Spa arose because most of the sponsorship contracts run till 2006 and the contracts specifically mention that they are not allowed to race without ads at any additional event.
