The Passing of a Demi God

At the 1982 Austrian Grand Prix at Osterreichring, Colin Chapman tossed his cap to the skies in celebration of an F1 victory for the last time.

Elio de Angelis soared to victory from the Williams of Keke Rosberg on that day in mid-August; but Champman's death from a heart attack just a few months later was a surprise to everyone.

He died on the 16th of December; exactly 20 years ago today.

One of the great team owners, he stood over the famous Lotus Racing name and brought drivers like Clark, Hill, Rindt, Peterson, Andretti, Mansell, Fittipaldi, Moss and Senna to Formula One victory.

Mansell is pushing it as well...

But that's not the point, Chapman was behind some of the most brilliant cars in F1 history, I wonder what'd he think of the current tech regs that leave little room for inspiration.

The notion as to the technical regulations is oneI'd be itnerested to know, he would probably hate today's cars, as one of the most brilliant techncial minds ever and also, unusuall, linked it with geat business sense and a pioneering advertising approach. A truly great man.

He didn't exactly build reliable cars though

Jochen Rindt died when his Lotus broke, probably the same for Jim Clark. Graham Hill broke his legs in a Lotus, Ronnie Peterson too.

But... When his cars held together, they were marvellous

Winners are Senna, Elio de Angelis, Jochen Rindt, Graham hill, moss, clark, petersen, fittipaldi, andretti and more in club motorsports

if anyone thought Hill meant Damon Hill, yur wrong, it was his dad Graham

Senna did win in lotus, once in '85, once or twice in '86, and a few times in '87

Mansell however never won a race in a lotus, the closest he came was at a wet Monaco in 1984, but he crashes when he was pulling away from Prost, who won, with Senna hot on his heels. Even hotter on both their heels was Stefan Bellof

Amazingly Stirling drove only for Rob Walker - Coopers and Lotuses (apart from Mercedes and all sorts of Brittish "cars")and not for the works team.

He suffered career-ending injuries in a Lotus 21 proving pirenzo's point that Colin's cars were too fragile.
May be that's why Lotus is not my favourite brand of F1 cars.

Unfortunately, no, as designers such as he are no longer seen in F1, and the rules are so constrained that freedom of expression in car design is rarely seen.

I remember reading somewhere about a firewall in one of his Lotus F1 cars being no thicker than baking foil to reduce the weight, bugger safety as long as it looks alright!!!!

Despite my query re Senna, I agree with the sentiments here.

You should all try and get hold of a copy of Jabby Crombac's excellent book on Colin Chapman. I've read it 4-5 times, it really is very good.

This was probably because he thought the perfect car was one that broke down as it crossed the line. If it was still running after that it was over-engineered and could lose some weight.

If he was still alive I bet he would have been pushing the boundaries wherever he thought he could get away with it.
