Emmo has finally pulled together a deal to run a car
Seventhgear again has this:
------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01/30/03 3rdUPDATE: Fittipaldi eyeing CART team We hear Emmo has finally pulled together a deal to run a car with the partnership of Conquest Racing owner Eric Bachelart. We also hear that Max Papis is likely to be the driver here and that one of Papis' engineers from Sigma Autosport has already been brought on board for the effort. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Has anyone heard anything to confirm this? We'll see... hopefully he can get it together.
But Max Papis???? I think a no-name rookie would be a better option... |

Isn't Max married to Emmo's daughter or something like that?

If he didnt have at least 1 race win it'd be a worse situation than Lemarie/Pollock

Rumours are fine as long as everyone knows it's a rumour.
Papis is a decent driver, in the 2003 field he'd be good. I'd rather a highly talented rookie rather than Papis, but not a pre-sponsored rookie. He's a good personality for CART, it needs that for 2003. Lotterer deserves a seat before most of the new drivers, but for some reason no one wants him enough. |

Sorry I should have added that this was from their rumor page and rated fairly strong.

Surprised to read "Conquest" and not "Patrick", as was also recently rumoured. Especially after Pat himself has stated that the infrastructure for a second car is basically already in place.

While I'd have rather Pook bought a ride for Richie Hearn, Jon Fogerty or Alex Barron than Darren Manning, I have no objection to this addition if true. Max has a good following in the States, and Emmo is popular as well. I think Max would give that Reynard a serious workout - one worth watching. If your going to buy rides, you might as well buy ones like this.
Fingers crossed, thumbs up for this one. |

Still, I'd rather see Herta driving for Emmo and Pat.

Isnt Herta a permanent fixture at Minardi F1 in Friday testing around the world? Assuming they find a tyre deal

Max is a proven race winner. Hopefully he'll be in the field.

Why Alex Barron? He never really did anything. Brits still have a certain amount of name appeal in the US. CART often seemed to market Dario over other forign drivers of similar success.

Alex Barron did a hell of a lot more than Gidley ever did. The guy nearly won Vancouver 98 in an Eagle Toyoa on Goodyears. Then in 00 he ran at the front at Surfers and Fontana in a freaking Dale Coyne car.
You're not serious about Dario are you? Could it be he's married to a mainstream US celeb? |

That was before he became Mr. Judd. Maybe I had poor judgement or missed a few races, my impression was that Barron didn't do much. Simply by the package the Vancouver thing sounds impressive...why don't I remember that? I was fairly impressed with Gidley, but I'm not one of the Memo boosters.

I think Vancouver 98 had some chaos/pitstop magic. At any rate after the final pitstop the order was Barron, Andretti, someone. Barron dumped it in the tire wall in the same corner where the Target Lola's were self destructing this year (down at the far end of the track) and Mikey was in fuel conservation mode and Dario squeaked through.

i think kurosawa led a few laps under yellow that race too. way to go dale.
I think Papis is a bad idea for Fittipaldi. Why does everyone love the guy? He's had a slightly-better-than-mediocre-while-lengthy career. A few wins and a heroic drive before Sigma screwed him was a good ending on a high note. He belongs in sports cars now. I think the Lemarie/Pollock combo is great. Pollock isn't an idiot, nor would he hire one to drive. He has a decent, albeit not too recent, race resume. I like it, in fact Lemarie will be my darkhorse pick this year. |

Kurosawa led at Long Beach 2000.
And if Papis can get into the field, better. He's probably more recognizable than Lemarie, at this stage |

Mario Dominguez has won more races than Alex Barron.
If you're talking "name recognition" then you don't want Alex Barron and Memo Gidley. You want Al Unser Jr. and Kyle Petty. |
