thats the exhaust. running at 18,000 rpms, on a V10 means each cylinder fires 9,000 times a minute for a total of 90,000 exhaust pulses a minute (1,500 a second). Thats where you get the whine from its the pulses blending together, its the same thing as your engine getting higher pitched as it revs just to a higher extent. It creates a higher frequency of the set sound wave problem produced by the engines intake combustion exhaust cycle.

on the subject of whistling . . . .1700 crossflow, twin 40's . . .no whistles, 1600 crossflow, twin 40's, no whistle
the 1700 had its inlet manifold and carbs nicked, plonked the 1600 ones on with the 40's, runs perfectly but it whistles, theres no air leaks anywhere, I can only assume its because of different trumpet lengths? |

I really doubt a stereo could get the volume up enough to really appreciate it, When I went to the USGP a few years ago, I was deaf for two days and I had Been wearing ear plugs

Couple of interesting littel side notes. As I menitoned about my trip, they were loud. To the point that we could hear them inside the house we were staying in....about a mile away from the tracj
Also a few years ago I read a study on some process that some Uni students developed to determine what RPM's the cars were running using detailed high quality recordings and some computer analysis program. The headsets worn by team members in the pits aren't just quite because they are thick, they are obviously radios, but built into the radios is an "active" noise cancellation program which uses a microphone in the earphones to listen to the sound filter out what is intended and then quiet the harsh engine nois by producing a cancelling sound wave which allows them to not only hear the radio transmissions, but also save their hearing. |

It's easy to determine the engine rpm. I work in P/T Sound Quality at Ford so I have access to advanced software to analyze signals.
You know it's a 10 cylinder so firing is 5th order. Simply track 5th order and use it to create an articficial tach signal. Voila! |

Another kind of whistle is the gearbox noise, also a very satisfying engineering sort of noise.
You hear it best at somewhere like La Source (sadly no more) especially on a slow down lap. The guys are touring into La Source and shifting down manually (For a change!) and you can really hear the gearbox whine as it matches the engine speed. Bit anorakky I know, but a great noise nonetheless |

if you can get your car running around 10,000 rpm with the right exhaust and few other goodies the tone is similar to the F1 car in first gear (info is of a ferrari)
