esorniloc should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
laps led at Portland

On the official box score for Portland on cart.com it gives the laps lead as:

Paul Tracy 42
Michel Jourdain 42
Adrian Fernandez 15
Sebastien Bourdais 1

Now it gives Tracy 18 points for the race (I assume 16 for 2nd, 1 for pole and 1 for most laps led).
It gives Jourdain 2 points (I assume 1 for 12th spot and 1 for having pole in qual 1).

So if PT and MJ led the same number of laps, why didn't Jourdain get a point?

Or at least give Tracy and Jourdain half a point each?

Have I missed something here?

What is the rule when 2 drivers lead the same number of laps and has it ever happened before?

I always thought the driver that finishes higher gets the point, but I could be wrong.

7.1 One (1) point will also be awarded to the driver that leads the most laps. In the event of a tie, the driver with the highest finishing position will be awarded this point.

Thanks!

Seems a silly rule to me then. Surely it would make more sence to split the point between the drivers or give a point for all who led???

Does anyone else think that rule is stupid?

Lets hope that PT doesn't win the title by just one point then!

I've not no problems with that rule. If the championship ends up tied (Montoya/Franchitti?) the winner is decided by most victories. So it's okay with me that this point is decided by best finish. Giving two points for most laps is, in my opinion, too many. Besides, I've got the feeling that there will be yet another bonus point available next year for fastest lap.

Let's hope they offer a hard charger point(for the driver who increased the most positions during the race) soon as well. This will get more mid-pack guys some more tv coverage.

Hard charger points are a silly idea, because they effectively reward drivers for qualifying poorly then waiting for the guys in front to retire. In Laguna it would've been fair enough, I guess, because Jourdain made some great overtaking moves, but he started in a false position, so was always more likely to overtake.

I think the points system needs to be changed fully!

I agree with Boots in that I'm not in favour of a "hard-charger" bonus point. I do however somewhat agree with the "fast-lap". The only problem is that the pole position should be worth more than the fastest race lap.

What is important, to me, is that no matter how many bonus points a driver can tally on a weekend, he should never outscore the race winner. Even as things stand right now, a driver finishing P2 can score 2 points for 2 poles and another for most laps, ending up with just one single point less than the winner gets. So, IMO, the more bonus points added, the more separation must be made between P1 and P2.

If it were up to me...

P1 20 Points
P2 14
P3 12
P4 8
P5 6
P6 5
P7 4
P8 3
P9 2
P10 1

BONUS POINTS:
1 - Friday Pole
1 - Saturday Pole
1 - Starting P1
1 - Most Laps Led
1 - Fastest Race Lap

This would give a maximum of five bonus points for any given weekend. (Four on ovals). And with the six-point spread between P1 and P2, the winner would always outscore the field.

There would still be points available for both days of quals, but the ultimate fastest time would score a second point.

There would be greater disparity between finishing on the podium and finishing P4.

And, as you've no doubt noticed, only the top-10 would score anything. (We're not starting 28 cars anymore).

With regard to ties for laps led; Alex Zanardi and Bryan Herta led 41 laps each in the 1996 Laguna Seca race. So when Zanardi nailed Herta at the Corkscrew on the last lap Herta lost not only the win but also the point for laps led. Zanardi took that point as he finished the higher of the two.

I like Macdaddy's system except for the third-palce result, which i think should jsut be 11 points. These systems ahve to decrease consecutively to be fair. The 'podium' difference between 3rd and 4th is purely symbolic, there's no reason why the podiums aren't designed for 4 drivers.

gtr69, what I was trying to do was make the pole position worth a little bit extra.

Fri Quals: 1:12.234 Paul Tracy
Sat Quals: 1:11.876 Oriol Servia

Both drivers would get a point, just as things are done now. But then the driver who actually starts P1 (Servia) would get a second bonus point.

Oh now I get it, makes sense, so the driver getting the friday pole wouldnt be holding back on saturday qualifying (like Tracy in Cleveland) would be good.

Bonus points in road racing have no place. Isnt qualifying on the pole allready enough of an advantage? In oval racing (especially a series like NASCAR) I could see points for pole since starting on pole is no more of an advantage than starting 43rd so you'd want to reward a good performance.
