I was waiting for Andy Rouse to appear on someone's list.......

As someone who watched an awful lot of BTCC back in the mid 80's, Rouse definitely comes near the top of my list....

I have not included any of today's so called 'stars' as they tend to overtake if a gap is there or not, rather than drive past cleanly. Better suited to a stock car track.

I'm gonna limit my answer to 'modern' touring car racing - mid eighties onwards - as, prior to that, things were very different with F1 and sportscar stars taking the wheel regularly.

I'd say, in no real order, and excepting Nigel Mansell who is obviously the greatest driver that has ever lived but who sucked in touring cars with the exception of one race:

Soper
Cleland
Rouse
Biela
Giovanardi
Winklehock
Tarquini
Aiello
Brock
Richards

Oh no, so I haven't.

Or rather, I would probably have deliberately forgotten him....

Since some of my Pacific pals seem to restrict their choice, I could counter with:
Toine Hezemans
Han Akersloot
Ed Swart
Peter Kox
Duncan Huisman
Ron Kluit
Huub Vermeulen
Henny Hemmes
Rob Slotemaker
Christijan Albers
but just making fun.
My all time top 10 would be, in no particular order:
Dieter Quester
Toine Hezemans
Hans Heyer
Dieter Glemser
Roberto Ravaglia
Andy Rouse
Gerry Marshall
Bernd Schneider
Hans Stuck
John Fitzpatrick

Anyone who leaves Win Percy out of their list, has missed a big one, along with Tom Walkinshaw and Martin Brundell IMHO.

Can't beat the old RS500 scraps between Rouse & Soper. Also have to include Percy, Brock, Skaife, Richards (Sr), Tarquini, Giovanardi, Smokin' Jo, Ravaglia, Schneider, Sir John Whitmore. Sorry - 10 isn't enough! The only way for me to judge would be to get them all together in identical cars - I wonder where Bill & Ted left their phone booth!

Going well so far i see!!! Keep up the good work!
Some names bring back a few good memories that's for sure!
Completely agree with Andrew Kitson - todays stars ARE more like stock car drivers! - and the MSA / TOCA let them get away with it.... Bizarre!
Here's my top 10.... ( in no particular order...)
Andy Rouse
Steve Soper
Roberto Ravaglia
Hans Stuck
Bernd Schneider
Dick Johnson
Nicola Larini
Gerry Marshall
Jim Richards
David Sears

Now, lets find 10 550BHP flame spitting RS500's, take 'em all to Mount Panorama, and let these boys get on with it!

In fact, lets now take the following drivers to essex arena, give 'em knackered Ford Granadas and see who is still alive after 15 laps...
Yvan Muller
Anthony Reid
Jason Plato
Frank Sytner
Colin Turkington
Tim Harvey
And, Finally......
Mike Smith!!!!!!!
