Formula Woman Update

Hey Guys, has anyone heard anymore of the current situation with Formula Woman, guess we`re going to have to get ready to move over! Still it`ll liven the paddock up a bit and give us more to talk about than Pippa Mann....

I believe the MSA has put their championship permit application on hold, pending further information being provided by the organisers.
It's very hard to be constructively critical about this series without being accused of sexism, but here goes!

There is no doubt that a number of women have been inspired to have a go at this series, which has to be a good thing, but I believe the intention is to have a maximum grid of 16, which is a bit on the small side, and is possibly the minimum grid size the MSA will expect of any championship next season.
For all it's good intentions of introducing more women to motorsport, there is no denying that this is a marketing exercise by Mazda, to sell more of the cars. As such, it is no different from many championships that have gone before, MGF's, Tomcats,Protons, etc, etc, ad infinitum. Championships 'invented' for marketing purposes tend to have a short shelf life and get the plug pulled by the manufacturers fairly quickly once they have served their purpose, and I don't see this one being any different.

Manufacturers like one make championships because their cars don't get beaten by cars from rival manufacturers, but this is ultimately not what national motorsport needs at the moment.

I would think that it's far more likely that it is on hold due to potentially infringing some EC rule about equal opportunity.
Can't imagine a Championship advertised as "Men only need apply."

Here here to both comments. Surely one of the appeals for women to go racing is to beat the men, I know Sue told me this. She also said that once you are all out there on the track (suited and booted)you are just competitors.

An interesting question that may need a high court judge to resolve! Most sports have a separate category for women as it is accepted that they cannot compete at a physical level.Motorsport & horses are among those of course that they can and do.

Why only a grid of 16?

Might be a marketing excercise for Mazda. But, might it not put men off buying Mazdas if they are seen as a "woman's car".
Personally, I think it is a wrong idea. I have seen women race cars, beat men and lose against men. Motorsport does not need categories for women only. Never understood the Women's Rally Champion.

'Why only a grid of 16?'

The reason is that the drivers would find it difficult to park more than this on a full grid.........only joking!

I really want to get into racing but am frankly in need of some advice on how to get started? I've asked to be e-mailed re: Formula Woman when they re-open for entries for 2005...Not sure if that's necessarily the best route in...
