Er, it's Hamilton's 3rd F3 racing weekend. It'll be his 5th and 6th actual F3 races on Sunday.

And he's only finished one so far!

That's a fair point, Dad.

I think, er, it's Gene Lee's first ever F3 event, and he's right at the other end of the field!

But I never said Lewis ain't an extremely talented driver. I just wish he'd be racing in British F3 up against Half-Nelson next year. Still, I suppose we'll get that battle in F1 one day...

Racing experience is somewhat irrelevant to practice laps. Im sure Hamilton has had plenty of F3 mileage. Plus he's with a capable team.

I agree with Mathias - I can only assume that it is a Mecedes inspired decision to put him into Euro F3 - he would certainly find it easier at circuits that both he and Manor know well (that is the UK ones).

As for mileage, russfield, he has not done a huge amount - and all of it in the public eye.

No Mercedes again. Did they ever give a reason for opting out of the Macau and Korea races?

But he did have a puncture and big crash at Brands, neither of which I'd class as his fault, so though they count as races, I believe he would have finished except for those factors.

(and I know it's getting a bit "what if!")

flexible-flyer should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
from crash.net

British ace Lewis Hamilton clinched pole position for the International Formula 3 Korea Super Prix with the fastest lap ever recorded around the Changwon Raceway.

The McLaren F1 protégé set a time of 1min 09.989secs to establish his place on the front of the grid for Sunday's race. Brazilian Nelson Piquet Junior lines up alongside Hamilton on the front row, while Piquet's team-mate Richard Antinucci starts third, just ahead of Menu Motorsport's Robert Doornbos.

Manor Motorsport driver Hamilton believes that on Sunday he can convert pole position into his first victory, in only his third ever F3 start: "I think we have a very good chance of winning, we've been quick in practice and qualifying and I just need to stay calm and collected to come away with the win," he said.

Despite his lack of experience, the 18-year-old was delighted with the balance of his Dallara Mugen-Honda. "We put the new tyres on and the car felt really good. I made a few changes in my driving style and the quick times just came. I don't have a lot of experience on street tracks," he added, "but my experience of Macau has really helped me this weekend."

Second on the grid was Hitech Racing's Piquet Junior, "I've found it a difficult weekend so far, I've been struggling to get used to the track as the corners are very tight and the chicane is risky. Yet in qualifying, I cooled the tyres down and then on my last lap I took a risk at the chicane and made up all my time there but I don't know if I could have gone faster than Lewis," said Piquet (middle pic).

The Brazilian struggled on the streets of Macau last weekend, but has learnt to adapt his driving to the streets of Changwon. "In Macau it was a lack of experience, I wanted to go fast straightaway and I shunted early on, but here I've kept off the wall and slowly built up my confidence," he explained.

Third on the grid overall was Richard Antinucci. The Amercian lost his times from the morning session after his Dallara Renault was found to be underweight by the scrutineers, however Antinucci set a time in the second qualifying session that puts him on the second row for Sunday's race. "This afternoon I was five kilograms overweight which proves that we've been genuinely quick all weekend," said Antinucci (lower pic).

Robert Doornbos was fourth quickest for Menu Motorsport and he hoped his luck will be better than Macau, where he retired while running third.

"The car worked well yesterday, we changed some things on the car and in the last 20 minutes it felt really good, it was just a shame that Piquet pipped us in the last minute. I'm going push hard tomorrow," stated Doornbos.

Polish driver Robert Kubica will start fifth, just ahead of the two TOM's cars of Tatsuya Kataoka and James Courtney. Adam Carroll lines ups eighth on the grid for Carlin Motorsport after crashing on his final lap in the morning session. Macau Grand Prix winner Nicolas Lapierre will start in 13th after clipping the tyre wall at the chicane in the first session.

Qualifying was stopped as soon as it started after Spaniard Pedro Barral hit the wall in the fast sweeps after the start. He destroyed his Swiss Racing Dallara and was taken to the hospital where he will remain overnight for observation.

The International Formula 3 Korea Super Prix 2003 will take place tomorrow (November 23), over two legs of 25 laps each.

I dunno, I guess he will test with ToyotaF1 on november the 25th and he wants to be 100 percentely prepared. It seems Macau was his last race 'till 2005 because Toyota just confirmed that Ryan won't race anywhere in 2004.

The old best lap was a 1:10.332 -Cochet's pole from 2001- and the trackrecord is 1:10.928 also by Cochet from 2001.But Cochet was there in 1999 and in 2000 also so to beat his pole by 0.350 for a rookie Hamilton is just amazing. 1:10.210 .232 .353 and .394 were Hamilton's 2nd, 3rd and 4th fastest laps respectively while fellow front-row starter Piquet's second fastest lap was only a 1:10.656 so it's going to be a more than tough race for Piquet if he wants to win. However Antinucci and Piquet jr. were also inside the old Cochet pole, plus the nice 8th and 9th places by Carroll and Thompson....what a day for the runners of British F3!
I just wonder what went wrong with the Carlin set-up so that Carroll and Rosberg jr. couldn't beat their own 1st qual laptimes during the 2nd qual.

That's what I was talking about: Rosberg jr. leads the warm-up with a 1:10.793 -his best time of the weekend so far, better than his qualifying time- there must have beeen something wrong with the set-up.
Viso also found the rhytm, 3rd after the warm-up and over half second faster than his qualifying time.

No race report yet, but according to lap chart Antinucci had an awesome start and led every lap of the race.other than that, it seems there was no overtaking in the top6 at all.
