Fatal Accident At Rally Tasmania

A motor sport competitor has died this afternoon in an accident during a motor rally near Burnie, Northern Tasmania.

As a result of the accident, a second competitor has been taken to Burnie District Hospital.

Both competitors involved are from interstate. Names cannot be released at this time.

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) will conduct a full investigation into the incident. In the meantime, CAMS and event officials are working with the relevant civil authorities.

CAMS has mobilised its chaplaincy and counselling services for the relatives of the deceased and injured competitors and for competitors and officials involved in the event.

CAMS, on behalf of the motor sport community, offers its sincere sympathy to the families and friends involved.

CAMS may issue additional statements as further information becomes available for release.

From the Rally Tasmania website:

Rally Tragedy

Rally Tasmania competitors were in mourning last night after a member of their tight-knit community died during the running of the first competitive stage of the event.

The man was "Henry" Lawson, of South Australia, navigator of car 151, a 1971 Holden Torana XU1.

The car's driver, John Beasley, also of South Australia, was taken to the North West Regional Hospital with what were first thought to be serious leg injuries.

He was later reported to have suffered minor injuries and was said to be in a stable condition.

Late last night police had not been officially notified by race organisers of the dead man's name.

Rally organisers have promised a full investigation into the incident.

Clerk of the course Brian Richardson told a media conference at the Burnie Civic Centre that the accident occurred on special stage one at West Ridgley.

He said the vehicle failed to negotiate a right-hand bend, following a crest, about 1.2km into the rally stage.

The car then struck a tree.

Mr Richardson said one occupant suffered serious injuries, the other fatal injuries.

He then went on to detail the sequence of events before and after the accident.

"About 6p.m. a report was received of the incident," Mr Richardson said.

"A first intervention vehicle was dispatched immediately and the stage was closed.

"The FIV was manned by paramedics and firefighting personnel."
