Super Tourers: Tricks

During that time the manufacturers used a lot of things to make the cars faster but were close (or over?) the edge of reglementations. If you know any, please post them here.

I'll kick off with the ones I know (could well be that some cars use the same "tricks, I don't know):

Volvo S40:

- Rear wing needed to be fixed. TWR made something to adjust the trunk and so the downforce.

- The pilot could adjust the height of the front bumper.

- The front window is not original, it's smaller to improve aerodynamics. So they adjusted the chassis of the car.

- Special, lighter headlights

BMW 320 STW:

- They started with the rollcage and assembled the rest of the body on the rollcage. This made the rollcage the carrying part which improves stiffness so I'm told.

- Special very thin windows to reduce weight (the rear window I'm 100 certain, the other windows I don't know). When you pushed on it with your finger, the window bended.

- Carbon "cardan" (don't know the exact English name) and differential (made by Mclaren) also to reduce weight... The cardan had to be set in place with a laser.

- Also lighter headlights.

- Thinner roof.

Sorry for my bad English

There were a lot of stories like this in the Supertouring era.

How many are true?

Who knows!

These are the ones I know that are 100% certain. I know some others but I'm not sure their true so I didn't post them.

I know it was discovered that BMW had overly widened wheel arches. Wasn't it b/c of BMW that they eventually the let the wheel wells be expanded? Then it became more rally like than touring car like.

There are a number of clever tricks used. My cavalier has polycarbonate windows in all but the front, plastic headlights very widended rear arches, drilled doors etc. They tried to get the cars as light as possible then ballast them where necesary.

What to think of the (m)ethanol some one team added to their fuel for qualifying... after that they needed to change the engine. Other teams probably did it too. Carbon bonnets, doors, trunks, bumpers,... they did everything to cut weight.

Have to check it. Could be those doors were only allowed in non full supertouring championships, e.g. Belcar.
