American Le Mans Series
Points Structure for Driver, Manufacturer and Team Championships

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finish Pos. Points Awarded Finish Pos. Points Awarded
1 25 9 11
2 21 10 10
3 19 11 9
4 17 12 8
5 15 13 7
6 14 14 6
7 13 15 5
8 12

Championships will be based on the number of points earned in up to the ten (10) best finishes out of the twelve (12) available races.
In events of 6 hours/1,000 km duration or longer, points will be awarded as above, plus anadditional 5 points for each of the fifteen positions.

One bonus championship point will be awarded to each driver who leads the overall race for at least one lap. Additionally one bonus championship point will be awarded to the driver leading the most laps. One bonus championship point will also be awarded to the driver in each class with the fastest race lap.

In case of a tie in the final point standings, the tie shall be resolved according to the number of first place finishes, then if necessary, the number of second place finishes, and so on down to tenth place. If a tie still remains, the tie shall stand and awards will be shared equally.

and currently the championship stands as this.

1 Allan McNish 260
2 Rinaldo Capello 249
3 Emmanuele Pirro 240
4 Frank Biela 239

so there is only 11 points between McNish and Capello
I havent worked out as to why McNish only needs to do 25 laps as yet to win the title ..but maybe from this table you can work out what may or may not happen.
