And who are you?

We have all done It  Asked someone who they are or what they do?

No names but I was with a reporter who claims to know sportscars and GT’s at Le Mans last year and she asked Gunnar Jeannette who he was? Then later at the Nurburgring didn’t know who Sasha Maasen was? hrug:

Must have been embarassing for someone who claimed to know about GT/sportscars.

17:47 on Friday and I'm still at work, so do I owe my soul to the company store?

I don't know too many people around the paddock, and my complete inability to remember faces doesn't help.

Not an error in recognising people, but at the Silverstone 1000km race in 1983, whilst walking round the paddock, my mate (we were 11 and 12 at the time) asked my dad why the tyres for the Marlboro Porsche (remember that car! - mmmm, nice) were bald!

We are still friends!

It was St. Peter who shouldn't call me 'cos I can't go, etc. etc.
Still at work btw. ("a mind that's weak and a back that's strong")

July 1973, Watkins Glen 6 Hour & CanAm weekend... it's Sunday morning and the badass CanAm cars are being pushed to pit lane. I'm standing in back of the first pit box, just nineteen, wide-eyed and drooling over a red-white Marlboro BRM V12 F1 car that seems to have appeared out of nowhere... there's a runty looking guy about my age dressed in a paisley puffy shirt and polyester bellbottoms opposite me. I ask him who is driving this car...

'I am."

"well, who are you?"

"Niki Lauda."

pity I lost the photo of him and the car, with UOP Shadows and turbo 917s in the background...

cut to Jarama 2001 ELMS round and a crowd is gathered round some swarthy looking fella.... I ask Brooksie "who's that?" He rolls his eyes and exasperatedly states "Juan-Pablo Montoya"

I'm not worthy!

Yes he never looked like much did he. No dress sense either; same old jeans & corduroy jacket, rain or shine.

This person might well know about sportscars and GT.
Doesn't have to know the people who drive them...

I'm into sportscars for what they are, cars, not particularly the racing, even while listening to Le Mans this year I didn't know who was in most of the cars.

You know the hotel comercial with the father, the little boy and Michael Waltrip? My best friend and I were walking around outside the Holiday Inn in Oshawa talking about how much we "hate" the Champion Audi when we heard snickering and looked up to see JJ Lehto and some other Champion-clad guys listening to us from a 2nd floor room balcony. Not exactly a failure of recognition, but awkward (and really embarassing) nonetheless.

Oh wait how could I forget the better of my two hotel stories! The same friend accidentally launched the window screen a couple of stories down to land right at the entrance to the Sheraton Petaluma in Sonoma, at which point what had to be the entire Risi team, Patrick Dempsey and a good deal of Flying Lizards came out through the lobby doors to look up and see both our heads hanging out the window. The screen missed the three Esperantes that were parked there by about 3ft. Good thing we were only staying one more night.

During the FIAGT round in 2003 in Oschersleben I was taking pictures of several cars and details in the pitlane, and there was a guy approaching me with a big smile saying "ey, no spionage heh?" Talked with him for 30 to 40 minutes, about the rumours at the time that Mercedes would enter a SLR, about the game we were developing (Simbin -> GTR), about motorsport in general, about the cars he drove in the past, etc, numerous things were spoken about. And at that point I still didn't know who he was. Later it turned out to be Thomas Erdos.

Are you *sure* this was Watkins Glen..? This get up sounds more "Back door" club than upstate NY..

What were you wearing?

um... what is a back door club? must be a place you frequent - frequently?
=)

truthfully I might have been wearing burgundy crushed corduroy bells and my own paisley puffy shirt with either orange suede platform shoes or the tritone platforms - dark red, tan, and baby blue... but the memory aint what it used to be... and I had no photo of myself to remind me what I was wearing.
