Montoya is too fat?
I did not think anyone could survive in modern F1 without being uberfit, but as it turns out, Juan Pablo Montoya has been put on a diet by Mclaren! I think this will do him good though.

Yep he isn't the fittest, but he isn't that unfit either. A new low-card diet and more excercise is helping though. According to autosport.com he has lost 13lbs since the last race.

Boom, boom!
Montoya comes out with the riposte that even though he might be a little porky, he still isn't as wrecked after a race as some other drivers. |

He really fills his suit. I think the diet is not so much due to speed, but due to having to fit with the sleek McLaren image!

As dixie says-he is still quite good after a race.
It's not a huge deal but a little weight loss should be good |

He certainly seems to be taking it seriously. I'm a little surprised at that actually as JPM strikes me as being his own man ... but I think he knows it's going to take a 100 percent effort from him to beat Kimi.

If JPM can be this good out of shape, then how good could he be if he took alittle care of himself?
At this level there's simply no excuse for being out of shape. He has the top trainers, equipment, and time that he needs to train, so there's no excuses. This is the 21st century, and all athletes are keenly aware of the benefits of working out regularly. Shame on JPM for not taking his sport seriously... |

Montoya has the natural physical fitness to take on Formula One, but shaping up would only do him good/better, and i'm quite amused nobody made him do more in Williams.
Anyway, Ron isn't one who's going to let a round man contradict the sleek image of Mclaren.... Now that JPM's done..when's Nobert going to take his place at the gym? |

To say he's "out of shape" is a bit much - he's a hell of a lot fitter than most of us, I'd venture. But at the top level, every little helps.

I think Montoya's short height and stocky build may make him look heftier than the average F1 driver, but he's not fat.

anyone have any actual facts... i.e. I remember reading somewhere all the drivers weights and heights at the start of the year in a magazine or book... I would say sato is the lightest with webber or coulty the heaviest..... just the height not fitness...
and I am sure Mac are not interested if he is fit or not.... as he is easily fit enough to race flat out for 50 laps, just the fact they can balast the car better if he does, and its far cheaper to get a driver to shed 5 kg than the car! I want facts on monty's WT ciao |

Although this is on the face of it a silly thread and just off season banter...In actual fact driver fittness has become a very important part of team race preparation in these days of high downforce 'G' in braking as well as the cornering.
There is nosuch thing as "natural" fitness referred by some posters above, I'm not sure how many of you know drivers who drive these 'G' Monsters or what fittness regimes F1 drivers are supposed to undertake (even on the off season) Teams employ Phisios and trainers for each driver (even the test drivers) and it's not just the Gym stuff you or I might indulge it, it's pretty specialised stuff. MS & MW to name just two, have become hooked on training (those of you who train or compete for a competitive sport will understand the 'addiction' of training) and it shows, some drivers with wealthy life styles let their vital training and fittness slip, especially in the off season. In Brasil you can't have failed to notice that JPM (amongst others) neck had given up! When Button turns up for testing after the off season or testing ban periods his neck lasts about half a dozen laps before he has to pit, luckily for him the job actually is the best training and his neck recovers quickly. There's no such thing as "Natural Fitness" these drivers have to be fulltime professional athletes not just millionaire show off glamour boys! |

Losing a few pounds could be ideal for JPM, and no driver can really fafford to fully pig out on treats at this time of year. As mentioned earlier, if he's this good while (slightly) overweight, how good could he be? All the same, I think he is naturally stocky, and there are plenty of supposedly fitter drivers who appear to struggle much more by the end fo races and look more tired when they get out of the car - Alonso comes to mind.

Montoya's neck may have gone in Brazil, but at the toughest circuit on the calendar for endurance - he won the race.
