bobjane-monaro should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Bob Janes Monaro Back in '72

Hey guys,

Im just wondering if anyone knows a bit about the ol Bob Jane Monaro and what it was running back in 72 (Engine/tranny etc). I know this car has had several different owners, engines, Body kits, paint schemes, sponsors etc.

Would anyone have any info or photos about what it was running back in the earlier days of its life.

I know it was running a 350 Chev. It was a beautiful looking car, probably the nicest one ever built.

In 1972 it ran a straight plug 350 chev ,rear drum brakes, front disc brakes &won the ATCC , with A FORD ESCORT T/C second .

It didn't win the '72 ATCC that was won be a Camaro.

Yes Stillwell came second behind Janes Camaro. The Monaro was driven by John Harvey who drove the car at the Surfers ATCC round, and the last round at Oran, scoring second at Surfers to finish 9th in the championship.

Cosworth, are those specs documented anywhere, or do you just remember from the times it ran?

What do you think the chances of finding some photos of the engine? is that a bit hopeful?

I know this is not what you asked for but Bob's Monaro sports sedan made 620hp & 520ftlbs back in '78.It was an absolute bullet in it's time & had the mighty Moff accusing the team of running nitrous!

So the engine was extensively re-development around the late 70's to run with such high horse power?

I remember reading somewhere it was around the 650 mark. But wasnt the engine capacity similiar to the Camaro of Bob Janes?

This gets me thinking that the engines were both of similiar nature... As for the nitrous oxide claim I think in the late 70's around 1978 was when (NOS) nitrous Oxide Systems pty. ltd. was just created. So i guess the technology was primitive still.

Didnt they use the NOS for drag racing instead?

mixxer has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
NOS was first used in Medical circles in the late 1800's - early 1900's, in aircraft in the 1940's to boost performance and around the same time the rod guys (a lot of them returning service men) thought if it works in a aeroengine it should work in a automobile engine. Those same hot rodders formed the core groups that developed the SCTA (Bonneville) and US Drag Racing.
Long winded way of saying yep they do use it Drag Racing.

The Camaro was forced to run a small block chev (350) in '72 by the rulemakers.It turned out to be a quicker car than the big block, winning the championship for Jano again.The nitrous claims were false, but illustrates how much horsepower Jano had, as the best of the other chev's were only getting around 570 at the time.

I have a huge poster of the car hanging in my garage, Bob Jane personally autographed the poster for me at the Bne motor show a couple of years ago.

I'm pretty sure Australian Muscle Car Magazine, (the greatest magazine ever published, by far) did a feature on the car recently. I'll check my back issues when I get home. I believe it always ran a 350 Chev with a four speed.

David Paterson; look up Chev.Camaro ZL1,on the web, Bob's was the #33 built, also catch the article in "Unique Cars" issue at the news agent now, then re-think the 'always a 350 claim !!!

Loved that Monaro when I was down having a look at the Targa in '03.It sounded awesome & was great to see ripping around Symmons Plains.

HNY All,

My mail is that Bob Janes Monaro will be back on track, as it appeared in 1972 at Oran Park, in the near future. If you shoot out to the garage and grab your copy of Auto Action Isue 38 (Friday July 21 1972), there is an article on the Monaro including a nice engine shot on page 4!
