Nice concept. But it sounds like it's just a dream at the moment.

Brilliant idea I heard about it back in August but the fact the has been no news since october draws its own conclusions. I'd love them to keep trying though.

It's been postponed, I believe.

It was meant to be this coming winter (2005), but the organisers failed to find all of the sunds required (IIRC Autosport said they were 5million short). They are now aiming for 2006.

I hope Grand Prix Masters does get off the ground. Because I like the idea of using some of the old F1 circuits as well as the more up to date ones. Also there should be some good racing, with all the cars being identical.

I quite like the idea as well.
Just hope they get the funds needed to go ahead with it for 2006... |

And it's one series where there isn't the argument that it's taking potential drivers away from existing championships.

Yes - but Johnny Herbert is a "paid driver".
It's not like say, Dallara Nissan and F3000 chasing after the same pool of young drivers with a budget. Anyway, GP Masters has been postponed and will probably not see the light of day. A1GP's filling the niche for a winter series - maybe some countries will use a big name ex F1 man as their entry. |

Here's hoping, but I guess it depends on whether or not their priories focus towards finding new talent on a nationalistic basis? Not a bad idea, really. It'll progbably be blend of each: that'd give young kids the chance to learn from the current experienced drivers, and/or previous stars.
What if it was required that each team had one of each? A sort of enforced mentoring system? |

Grand Prix Masters would be the retirement home for ex-F1 drivers.

Excellent idea. All we need is proper ruling (FIA bye bye) and then it'll be fantastic

I can't wait to see a few drivers I didn't get to see race and dice it out against other legends.

So our nige is back. Thats a real boost for the championship. I for one would not bet against him, even though there are a few younger drivers in there who have never given up racing (Jan Lammers and Stefan Johansson). Given some testing I think it will be Prost and Mansell all over again.

What a tragic, tragic shame Ayrton is no longer with us.

I think moral victory should go to Ayrton. As to Piquet, I am sure he suffered an injury at Indy a few years ago which would not allow him to compete.

What's with all this romantic stuff about Ayrton? True he was a bl**dy good driver, possibly the best ever, but he was ruthless, like a certain 7 times world champion we all love to criticise, especially when he 'accidentally' ran our Damon off in Aussie land. If I recall didn't Senna deliberately take out Prost on the first corner in Japan to win the championship, well at least that's how it looked to the more cynical of us, and as an observer, I know we can report what we see, not what we think, but nevertheless.................
Anyway, it looks to be brilliant, to me at least, and the more drivers and events the better! |
