I'm in the middle of reading Mark Donohue's book "The Unfair Advantage". His is a story in which Roger Penske plays a huge part. Reading about their racing exploits in Can-Am & Trans-Am, etc, I must ask; Has Roger Penske ever done anything by halves??

I have heard that his motto is "Take big bites. Moderation is for monks."

I,ve known Roger since his Can Am days when I first got a ride around Watkins Glen with Donahue. Everything that Roger does is done as professionally as possible, with a lot of analysis beforehand. EVERYTHING is planned out to the minutest detail possible, and then executed witha boyish enthusiasm.
The one area that he lacks in is Series promotion, but I suspect that is largely due to the era in which he spent his formative years. In the 60's and '70's, race promotion was solely the province of the race promoter - the team leaders only had to concern themselves with promotion of their team. Unfortunately, it shows in how badly CART is currently promoted. If RP had been born & raised in England instead of the States, he would probably have multiple F1 championships under his belt, and be second in F1 pwer only to Bernie. |

When I went to the Gateway race last year, one of the things that struck me was, compared to the poor promotion of the race downtown, Team Penske put on a great show, with several cars on show around the track and many billboards & hoardings

Well, then, I'm puzzled as to why he's doing essentially Naught, Zip, Zero, Nada to promote the fact that Gil won the Championship...and apparently not licensing anyone else to promote him either.
Why do you think this is? |

Roger Penske has proven time and again that he is a true captain of industry in motor racing and other business. However, Liz is correct about his lack of promotion of the team and the series. Why are there no commercials for the FedEx CART series on ESPN/ABC Sports? Why are there no ads pimping the upcoming events this season that we have all (well North American fans) seen for NASCAR on NBC and Fox? Why haven't the teams and sponsors been promoting themselves?

It says a lot that probably the series' best promoter is David Letterman.
